From Setbacks to Service: How One Woman’s Vision is Helping
Veterans Thrive

Mary McColgan, a Bay Area resident, founded Veterans Depot, a non-profit helping formerly homeless veterans. The organization provides essential items like used furniture, household supplies, and food. Volunteers collect and deliver these items to veterans in need.
On a recent morning, McColgan supervised volunteers loading a trailer for a veteran needing a dinette set, sofa, and coffee table. Volunteer Mike Vaughn highlighted their dedication to the cause.
Donations of gently used furniture often come through social media or word of mouth. McColgan recently received Ikea furniture from a family who decided it didn’t match their décor.
Veterans Depot also supplies cleaning products and food boxes, stored and distributed from McColgan’s home. Her journey began after a back injury, depression, and a DUI led her to community service at an American Legion post, sparking her passion for aiding veterans.
Despite the hard work, McColgan finds it rewarding, saying, "It’s heartwarming to see how happy they are to know that people really do care.
One particularly striking and little-known fact about charitable donations for veterans is the "Fisher House Foundation."
This organization provides "homes away from home" for military and veteran families while their loved ones receive medical treatment. Since its inception in 1990, Fisher House has saved military families more than $500 million in lodging and transportation costs. Many people are unaware that these homes are located at major military and VA medical centers nationwide, and they have provided millions of days of lodging to families in need.
The foundation's work significantly alleviates the financial burden on military families during challenging times, highlighting the profound impact of charitable donations for veterans.
