Keep your finger on the Pulse!
GOOD MORNING
My apologies for not catching that the Of Interest article on the Olympic athlete return to Sarasota in yesterday’s issue was set to “not visible” on my end. The article was visible to me but not to you. I’ve corrected it in today’s issue.
I would have never caught this had it not been for a reader pointing it out in the reader poll at the bottom of the newsletter. Thanks!

Costco to Enforce Membership Verification at Store Entry Points

Costco is implementing a new system that requires members to scan their membership cards at store entrances. This change will be rolled out over the next few months. Customers will need to scan either a physical or digital card before entering, with attendants available to assist. If a card is inactive or expired, or if a new membership is needed, customers will be directed to the membership counter.
The update, first announced in January, has sparked mixed reactions online. Some worry about potential delays, while others believe it will prevent nonmembers from causing issues at checkout. Costco's membership model remains central to its business.
Debby Brings Relief to Tampa Bay Water Supply, But Drought Alert Persists

Tropical Storm Debby provided a much-needed boost to Tampa Bay's water supply, adding 2 billion gallons to the regional reservoir and replenishing local rivers. Despite causing significant flooding and pushing rivers to near-historic levels, the storm delivered critical rain during a summer of lower-than-average precipitation. The C. W. Bill Young Regional Reservoir now holds nearly 5 billion gallons, about one-third of its capacity.
However, the region remains under a Stage 1 Drought Alert due to a rainfall deficit. Water managers are working to fill the reservoir before the rainy season ends in mid-October. Water restrictions, initially imposed in November, continue to be enforced, with specific days and times allotted for watering based on address. Despite consistent July rains that were 2 inches above normal, it remains uncertain whether the area’s water supply will fully recover, with water shortage conditions being reevaluated monthly as the situation develops.

From Paris to Sarasota: Gymnast Stephen Nedoroscik Returns Home to Cheering Fans

Stephen Nedoroscik, the 25-year-old gymnast, returned home to Sarasota after winning two bronze medals at the Paris Olympics. Arriving at Sarasota-Bradenton National Airport, he was greeted by enthusiastic fans. Nedoroscik, wearing his Team USA shirt, mingled with supporters holding balloons, signs, and cutouts of his face.
Originally from Worcester, Massachusetts, Nedoroscik now trains at EVO Gymnastics near the airport with his teammate Brody Malone. He was accompanied on his flight by Sam Mikulak, a three-time Olympian who coaches at EVO.
Nedoroscik’s performance in Paris earned him third place in the pommel horse finals and helped the U.S. men’s team secure a bronze, their first Olympic medal in 16 years. Known for his viral pre-routine ritual of removing his glasses, Nedoroscik hinted at his desire to compete in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, aiming for gold.

Tampa Bay Athletes Bring Home Olympic Glory from Paris

The 2024 Paris Olympics have been a proud moment for Tampa Bay, with several local athletes bringing home medals. Out of Florida's 46 Olympic representatives, 14 hailed from the Tampa Bay area.
Clark Dean, a Sarasota native and two-time Olympian, earned a bronze medal in rowing. Bobby Finke from Clearwater secured gold in the 1500m freestyle and silver in the 800m freestyle. Emma Weyant of Sarasota claimed bronze in the 400m individual medley, and Brandon’s Austin Krajicek won his first Olympic medal, a silver, in tennis doubles.
These athletes have represented Tampa Bay with distinction, contributing to Team USA's impressive medal count and bringing Olympic glory back to their hometowns.

One particularly striking and little-known fact about the Olympics is that the modern Olympic Games were once canceled due to a war. The 1940 Summer Olympics were originally scheduled to be held in Tokyo, Japan, but they were canceled because of World War II.
What makes this more interesting is that these were actually the second Olympic Games to be canceled due to the war; the 1916 Games, planned for Berlin, were also called off because of World War I.
These cancellations highlight the deep impact global conflicts can have on even the most celebrated international events.
