DeSantis Spotlights $7B “Moving Florida Forward” Plan in Tampa Bay

Gov. Ron DeSantis is promoting his administration’s $7 billion “Moving Florida Forward” initiative, fast-tracking over 20 major transportation projects across Florida—several in the Tampa Bay region.
The most notable is the $1 billion replacement of the Howard Frankland Bridge, now the largest infrastructure project in Tampa Bay history. The new span will increase capacity by 50%, boost hurricane resilience, and improve traffic safety.
I-275 is also being expanded in Pinellas County with new express lanes that connect directly to the bridge, expected to cut travel delays by up to 85%.
Additional projects include:
Champions Gate interchange upgrades on I-4 in Polk County
Redesign of the Fruitville Road/I-75 interchange in Sarasota
FDOT Secretary Jared Perdue calls the program a “legacy investment,” adding that recycled materials from demolished infrastructure are being reused.
Florida will invest $70 billion more in transportation over the next five years.
St. Pete Eyes Future with Electric Air Taxis

St. Petersburg could soon become a pioneer in advanced air mobility by embracing eVTOLs — electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft that resemble large drones. These air taxis are quieter, safer, and more efficient than helicopters and could shuttle passengers between local airports or across Tampa Bay.
A city council–created aviation task force met Monday to explore the technology’s potential. Members say the timing must be right—not too early to risk collapse, but not too late to miss out.
With the FAA issuing final eVTOL rules last year, startups are racing to gain approval and build infrastructure like charging hubs and launchpads.
St. Pete has aviation roots, launching the world’s first commercial airline in 1914—though it folded in months.
Still, leaders believe air taxis could be commercially viable within five years, with rides from St. Pete to Tampa costing about $80, comparable to premium rideshares.

Wesley Chapel Man Arrested After 106 MPH Chase Linked to Instagram Money Hunt

A Wesley Chapel man was arrested Sunday evening after leading Florida Highway Patrol on a high-speed chase that reached 106 mph on State Road 56.
Trooper D. Ramos spotted a black Toyota Corolla speeding at 85 mph in a 55 zone near Shops Lane. When the trooper tried to stop the vehicle, the driver ran red lights, fishtailed, and weaved through traffic. The pursuit ended near Stockton Drive, where the vehicle finally pulled over.
The driver, Juanniel Axelr Luque Cantillo, was taken into custody at gunpoint with help from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.
Cantillo admitted he was racing to the BMW dealership in search of $60 reportedly hidden there as part of an Instagram scavenger hunt. He panicked when he saw law enforcement.
Cantillo now faces charges including fleeing to elude, reckless driving, and “super speeder” violations, and was booked into Pasco County Jail.

Bacon Egg’N Cheese Rolls into Wesley Chapel
This October

New York-style breakfast favorite, Bacon Egg’N Cheese, is bringing its beloved bodega-inspired sandwiches to Wesley Chapel in mid-October. Founded by former electrician Karin Araya, the business began in Brandon just 18 months ago and now operates trucks in Brandon and Downtown Tampa, with a fifth catering truck launching in Miami this September.
Authenticity is key: the menu features NYC staples like bacon, egg, and cheese, the “Hungry Man”, and the Harlem-famous chopped cheese. Ingredients like New York-imported Kaiser rolls and Northeast spring water preserve that authentic flavor.
The Wesley Chapel truck will run 7 days a week (closed Tuesdays) from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with outdoor seating and delivery via Uber Eats and DoorDash.
Stay tuned on Instagram for launch updates and future event appearances.
