“We Don’t Feel Safe Anymore”: Pasco Couple Faces Third Crash on Property

Sharon and Terry Brumfield say they no longer feel safe after a car launched into their home, crashing vertically into the building around 2:30 a.m. on Aug. 16. Florida Highway Patrol says the driver, Matthew Justin Newman, was speeding at 90 mph on Cecilia Drive when the crash occurred.

This marks the third major crash on the Brumfields' property, following similar incidents in 2009 and 2013, both involving drunk drivers. Despite previous pleas for protection, Pasco County only added a guardrail five years ago, which the couple says isn’t enough.

The latest crash caused over $8,100 in damages, and the family says it's severely affecting their grandchildren’s sense of safety.

Pasco officials state that the site already includes guardrails, lighting, signage, and markings, and that no additional safety measures are planned.

The Brumfields have started a GoFundMe to help cover repair costs.

From Classrooms to Launchpads: USF Unveils Aerospace Engineering Degree

The University of South Florida (USF) has officially launched a new aerospace engineering major, welcoming its first undergraduate class this fall. It’s now one of only three programs of its kind in Florida.

Housed in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, the program offers bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD degrees, designed in collaboration with industry leaders to meet the growing demand for aerospace talent in Florida.

Students will study propulsion, aerodynamics, space exploration, and more—backed by hands-on research sponsored by NASA, the Department of Defense, and the U.S. Space Force.

With Florida home to 130,000 aerospace jobs, 17,000 aerospace companies, and more launchpads than any other state, USF’s investment comes at a critical moment.

The program is part of a larger expansion in USF’s engineering department, which boasts over $6 million in annual research funding and the nation’s first manned eVTOL vehicle at a public university.

From Big Contract to Waivers: Kim Ha-sung’s
Short Rays Stint Ends

The Tampa Bay Rays have placed infielder Kim Ha-sung on waivers, ending their partnership less than a year after signing him to a 2-year, $29 million deal—one of the largest in club history.

Kim, who returned from shoulder surgery, struggled with recurring hamstring and back injuries, limiting him to just 24 games, where he hit .214 with 2 home runs.

He was claimed by the Atlanta Braves, as Tampa Bay pivots to develop top prospect Carson Williams, their 2021 first-round pick, now adjusting to the majors.

Rays president Eric Neander admitted the decision factored in the team’s poor playoff odds (1.7%) and focus on building for 2026.

Waiving Kim also sheds $2 million in remaining salary, with the expectation he will not opt out of his $16 million 2026 option.

Manager Kevin Cash called the move tough but vital to giving Williams a 30-game learning window.

Randy Returns: Arozarena Eager for Emotional Reunion in Tampa

Mariners outfielder Randy Arozarena is set to return to Tampa this week — not just for baseball, but for a meaningful homecoming.

It will be the first time Arozarena faces his former team, the Tampa Bay Rays, since being traded to Seattle in July 2024. Despite being hurt by the move, he’s eager to reunite with former teammates and fans who once cheered him through his Rookie of the Year (2021) and All-Star (2023) seasons.

“I’m excited,” Arozarena said. “It’ll still feel like home.”

Arozarena is having one of his best seasons at age 30, with 26 HRs, 66 RBIs, and 24 steals.

Though the Rays are playing at Steinbrenner Field due to Hurricane Milton damage at Tropicana, Arozarena says it’s the fans, not the field, that make it special.

Seattle also signed reliever Nick Anderson, 35, to a minor-league deal, making him postseason-eligible if needed.
