A Voice for Nature: Jane Goodall’s Enduring Message to Florida

Dr. Jane Goodall, the pioneering primatologist who changed the world’s understanding of chimpanzees, died Wednesday at age 91. Known for her tireless conservation work and deep connection with nature, Goodall was a frequent visitor to Florida, where she inspired thousands with her message of hope and resilience.
In interviews with the Tampa Bay Times in 2023 and 2024, she urged Floridians to work together to protect endangered species like manatees and panthers, emphasizing that “nature is amazingly resilient” if given a chance.
Her advice to the next generation: “Take advantage of every opportunity. Don’t give up.”
From Tanzania’s forests to Tampa’s lecture halls, Goodall spent her life bridging science and storytelling. She believed action was rooted in hope — without it, “people don’t take action.”
Even at 90, she traveled globally to speak for the Earth. She once shared her favorite drink was Johnnie Walker Black, toasting life and legacy with humor and heart.
Here’s a fascinating but lesser-known fact about Jane Goodall:
👉 She had no formal scientific training when she began her work in Africa.
When Jane Goodall first traveled to Tanzania in 1960 to study chimpanzees, she had only completed a secretarial course and lacked a university degree. What made her entry into the field extraordinary was that renowned anthropologist Louis Leakey chose her specifically because she had no formal training — he believed this would allow her to observe the animals without preconceived scientific bias.
Her meticulous and empathetic observations — including the groundbreaking discovery that chimpanzees use tools — were initially dismissed by the scientific community, not just because she lacked credentials, but also because she gave the chimps names instead of numbers.
Despite the criticism, Goodall’s work revolutionized primatology and led her to eventually earn a Ph.D. in ethology from the University of Cambridge, one of the few people ever admitted without a bachelor's degree.

Red Meat + Healthy Eating = Better Brain
and Gut Health

A new study of over 3,600 participants suggests that red meat, when included in a high-quality (high-HEI) diet, can enhance levels of brain-critical nutrients like B12, zinc, and iron — without disrupting gut microbiota or increasing mental health risks.
Published in Scientific Reports, the study found that red meat eaters in balanced diets had better micronutrient profiles, higher gut diversity, and no adverse shifts in mental health outcomes.
In contrast, all groups — regardless of meat intake — fell short on fiber and vitamin D, and calcium intake remained borderline.
Participants following high-HEI diets, regardless of red meat intake, were also linked to lower rates of depression, ADHD, and other disorders.
The study was funded by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, though it reported no involvement in analysis or design.
Researchers note the findings are observational and call for caution in interpreting causality, but highlight the importance of overall diet quality over individual food stigma.

Buccaneers Bruised: Injuries Mount as Special Teams Falter Again

Injuries are mounting fast for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who suffered their first loss of the season, falling 31-25 to the Philadelphia Eagles.
While Tristan Wirfs and Chris Godwin returned, the team saw several more go down, including Mike Evans (hamstring) and Christian Izien (quad). A growing list of starters—Kancey, Mauch, Kieft—are already out for the season.
Coach Todd Bowles called the situation “concerning,” noting: “We’re running out of bodies.”
Despite the setbacks, Tampa’s defense held Philadelphia to -1 yard in the second half. But special teams errors continue to haunt them — another blocked punt returned for a touchdown was the difference-maker.
Baker Mayfield still delivered big plays, including two TDs over 70 yards, while kicker Chase McLaughlin nailed a record-setting 65-yard FG.
Linebacker SirVocea Dennis struggled, and the Bucs again failed to force a turnover.
Tampa heads to Seattle (3-1) next, with injury reports looming large.
Record Breaker: Will Griffin Becomes Tampa Bay’s Passing King

Jesuit High School’s Will Griffin has officially etched his name into Tampa Bay football history, becoming the region’s all-time leading passer with 10,677 career yards. The Florida Gators commit surpassed Jefferson alum Quentin Williams’ previous mark of 10,384 yards, a record that stood across Hernando, Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas counties.
Griffin’s stellar senior season is far from over — with Jesuit sitting at 4-1, the team is playoff-bound, giving Griffin more opportunities to widen the gap.
The Under Armour All-American also recently passed Tim Tebow on Florida’s all-time passing list. He's now within striking distance of the state's top three.
Griffin credits his success to his father, coaches, and teammates, highlighting a foundation of support and preparation.
Choosing Florida came down to confidence in the coaching staff and proximity to home. “Family is just a big thing for me,” Griffin shared.
