Tampa Am Rolls In: Global Skate Showcase Returns Oct. 16–19

The 31st Annual Tampa Amone of the world’s premier amateur skateboarding competitions — returns October 16–19 to the legendary Skatepark of Tampa (SPoT).

Recognized globally as a launchpad for future pros, past winners include Olympic medalist Nyjah Huston, Felipe Gustavo, and Luan Oliveira. Last year’s winner, 16-year-old Juni Kang, credited his victory with boosting his career and Olympic aspirations.

Practice begins Oct. 15, free to the public, while the main contest runs Thursday through Sunday, with finals on Oct. 19. Fans can also stream the event if unable to attend in person.

Tampa Am is more than a competition — it’s a weekend-long celebration of skate culture. Nightlife events unfold both at the SPoT warehouse and nearby The Bricks in Ybor City, adding to the scene’s electric atmosphere.

Tickets start at $15, and the event continues to solidify Tampa’s place in global skateboarding history.

Polk County Inmate Caught with Thermos Where Sun Don’t Shine

A 51-year-old Florida man, Walter Frymire, was arrested in Polk County after deputies discovered he had attempted to smuggle a thermos into jail — by inserting it into his body. The incident began when authorities responded to a report of a naked man in a public park. Upon arrival, deputies found Frymire clothed and gave him a verbal warning.

However, shortly after, Frymire trespassed onto nearby railroad tracks, prompting his arrest. With 25 prior arrests and five stints in state prison, he was processed at the Polk County Jail, where a routine body scan revealed the bizarre contraband.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, known for his blunt briefings, quipped, "He put it up the exit ramp." Frymire was taken to the hospital where a specialist safely removed the thermos.

Despite threatening the deputy, Judd emphasized, "That deputy may have saved his life." Frymire remains in custody — now thermos-less.

Florida Has 4 of the Nation’s Best Taco Joints,
Yelp Says

Antojitos Doña Chirris in Clearwater has been named one of the Top 100 taco spots in the U.S., according to a new Yelp ranking, joining three other Florida restaurants on the list.

The local favorite ranked No. 97 in the country, celebrated for its birria tacos and authentic flavors. Yelp’s list, published ahead of National Taco Day (Oct. 7), was based on review volume and ratings specifically mentioning “tacos.”

The other top Florida taco joints include:

  • Taqueria El Asador in Pensacola (#47) – once a gas station secret, now nationally known.

  • Los Chiludos in Holmes Beach (#53) – praised for its fish tacos with mango salsa and chipotle aioli.

  • The Pass Kitchen in Altamonte Springs (#90) – a hit near Orlando with bold flavors and birria favorites.

Yelp noted these gems are often “a little off the radar” but consistently wow customers with regional Mexican taco varieties and local charm.

Older Athletes Show Immune Advantage After Decades of Training

A new study reveals that decades of endurance exercise can “train” the immune system, helping it become more adaptable, efficient, and less prone to inflammation as people age.

Researchers studied older adults (average age 64) with over 20 years of endurance training, including activities like running, cycling, and swimming. Compared to non-athletes, their natural killer (NK) cells—a frontline immune defense—showed greater metabolic control, reduced inflammatory response, and increased resistance to cellular exhaustion, even under pharmacological stress.

According to lead researcher Luciele Minuzzi, the immune system in long-term athletes becomes more mature and balanced, maintaining strong responses without overreacting. This may contribute to healthier aging by reducing chronic inflammation—a driver of many age-related diseases.

The research, published in Scientific Reports, was part of a broader project supported by FAPESP and São Paulo State University (UNESP).

Lifelong training appears to optimize immune “fitness” well into older adulthood.

Bucs Bolster RB Depth, Bring Back Preseason Leader Owen Wright

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have re-signed running back Owen Wright to the practice squad, reinforcing depth amid starter Bucky Irving’s ongoing injuries.

Wright, who led the team in preseason rushing (100 yards, 1 TD), returns after being released post-camp. He originally signed with Tampa Bay in July 2025, following a stint with the Baltimore Ravens. In addition to his rushing contributions, Wright added receiving yards and a kickoff return during the preseason.

To make room on the 17-man practice squad, the Bucs released veteran guard Sua Opeta, who had battled injuries since signing in 2024.

With Irving sidelined by foot and shoulder injuries, the Bucs’ current active RBs include Rachaad White, Sean Tucker, and Josh Williams. Wright now serves as the lone practice squad back, potentially positioning him for activation if depth is needed.

Wright began his college career at Monmouth, later transferring to William & Mary, and entered the NFL as a 2023 undrafted free agent.
