Concrete Solutions: Tampa’s First 3D-Printed Home Underway

Tampa’s first 3D-printed home is under construction at 4426 Lurline Circle, marking a major step forward for affordable housing. Using a robotic arm printer, walls are built layer-by-layer with concrete, reducing material waste and labor needs.

Led by Will Crawford of the CDC of Tampa, the initiative is funded in part by a $500K Hillsborough County grant, with the goal of creating durable, energy-efficient homes. Traditional interiors will be framed, but exterior walls are printed.

Construction costs could drop to $100/sq ft, compared to the average $180, making this a game changer. Only four workers are needed to operate the printer, and the homes offer better insulation, cutting HVAC needs in half.

Additional projects include a Temple Terrace development and Heroes Landing in Seffner for disabled veterans.

“This is about scaling up smart, sustainable housing,” Crawford said. “There’s a lot to learn, but the potential is massive.”

ABC Action News Wins National Murrow Award for Kia/Hyundai Fire Investigation

ABC Action News/WFTS has earned a National Edward R. Murrow Award for its continuing coverage of spontaneous fires in Kia and Hyundai vehicles — the only Tampa Bay station to be recognized both nationally and regionally this year.

The two-year investigation, led by I-Team Reporter Jackie Callaway, photographer Matt McGlashen, and producer Erin Smith, uncovered early internal warnings that automakers allegedly ignored. Their reporting led to federal inquiries and multiple recalls.

The recognition highlights the power of investigative journalism. "This investigation shows the importance of quality journalism," said General Manager Nick Nicholson.

Earlier this year, the station also won a Regional Murrow Award for exposing flaws in Florida’s teacher certification exams, prompting major state policy changes.

News Director Sarah Moore added, “We’re proud to be nationally recognized for stories that make a difference in the lives of our viewers.”

The Murrow Awards were the first major journalism honors to formally recognize digital-only news organizations as equal contenders alongside traditional radio and television outlets.

This groundbreaking shift occurred in the early 2000s, long before most other journalism award bodies caught up. It was a bold move at the time, acknowledging the rising importance of online investigative journalism in shaping public discourse — a nod to Edward R. Murrow's own legacy of embracing emerging media.

While most people associate the Murrow Awards strictly with broadcast news, this inclusion of digital-first reporting helped pave the way for a broader, platform-agnostic standard of excellence in electronic journalism.

Quitting Smoking After Cancer Diagnosis Significantly Boosts Survival

A new study from the Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network shows that quitting smoking after a cancer diagnosis significantly improves survival — even in advanced-stage cases.

Using data from over 13,000 cancer patients, researchers found that those who quit smoking within six months of diagnosis had up to twice the survival rate of those who continued. Among stage III and IV patients, continued smoking nearly doubled mortality risk (aHR 2.11).

Still, only 1 in 5 smokers quit within six months. The study highlights a major gap: most patients weren’t offered adequate cessation support, despite strong guidelines from NCCN and ASCO.

Researchers call for integrating cessation treatment into oncology care — alongside surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation — making it a "fourth pillar" of cancer treatment.

While the data is limited to one cancer center, findings support broader use of low-burden, EHR-enabled cessation tools like ELEVATE and C3I.

Despite missing their top four receivers, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers held firm for a 30-19 win over the 49ers Sunday, improving to an NFC-best 5-1. Baker Mayfield, now firmly in the MVP conversation, delivered a gutsy performance, highlighted by a third-down escape-act run and a 45-yard TD pass to rookie Tez Johnson.

Kam Johnson, another unlikely hero, hauled in his first NFL catch — a 34-yard score before halftime. The defense stepped up, producing six sacks, two takeaways, and limiting Christian McCaffrey to 101 scrimmage yards.

The Bucs played without Emeka Egbuka, Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Jalen McMillan, and RB Bucky Irving, yet gained 352 total yards with zero turnovers.

Lavonte David, Jamel Dean, and Yaya Diaby made key defensive plays late, sealing the win and preserving the Bucs’ best start since 2005.
