Cleaner Waters, More Wildlife: River Health Rebounds in Tampa

After decades of pollution and neglect, the lower Hillsborough River is finally hitting key recovery goals, according to a new draft report by the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD).
For the first time since benchmarks were set in 2007, salinity, water flow, and other critical health indicators have consistently met target levels.
"Significant progress" has been made over the last 20 years, says Randy Smith, SWFWMD’s Bureau Chief of Natural Systems and Restoration.
Local observers agree. Laurence Salkin, who launched the Tampa Water Taxi Company two decades ago, says he’s noticed cleaner water and more wildlife, thanks in part to city-installed debris catchers.
Still, concerns remain about elevated salinity near Sulphur Springs. SWFWMD plans to work with Tampa officials to address this issue.
The full report will be formally presented early next year.
From Michigan to Florida: Where Retirees Are Heading in 2026

Midland, Michigan has taken the No. 1 spot on U.S. News & World Report’s 2026 Best Places to Retire, marking its debut on the list.
This year’s rankings expanded from 150 to 250 cities, evaluating over 850 U.S. locations based on six key factors: quality of life, affordability, health care, retiree taxes, job market, and—new for 2026—population and migration trends among adults 55+.
Quality of life was the most heavily weighted metric, reflecting a growing retiree preference for livability over low costs.
Weirton, West Virginia ranked second, with strong marks in happiness, affordability, and tax benefits.
Homosassa Springs, Florida followed in third, boosted by growth in the 55+ population and high life quality scores.
The rankings were informed by public surveys of Americans aged 45+ and a wide array of federal and local data sources.
This shift in methodology allowed several Midwestern cities to rise, reshaping the national retirement landscape.

Tom Brady Clones Beloved Dog Lua Through Biotech Partner

Tom Brady has revealed that his new dog, Junie, is a genetic clone of his late pet, Lua, who died in 2023.
Brady shared the news the same day that Colossal Biosciences, a Dallas-based biotech start-up he’s invested in, announced its acquisition of another animal cloning company.
“I love my animals. They mean the world to me and my family,” Brady said in a statement. He explained that the cloning was done non-invasively through a blood draw from Lua before her death.
Colossal Biosciences has gained recent attention for its work in "de-extinction" science, having announced earlier this year the birth of three dire wolf puppies, a species believed extinct for over 12,000 years.
The company said it used DNA from ancient remains to recreate the animals.
This latest announcement places Brady at the center of a growing conversation about pet cloning and the ethical boundaries of biotechnology.
Here’s an astonishing but lesser-known fact about cloning:
Clones can age faster than naturally born animals due to shortened telomeres — the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes.
When Dolly the sheep, the first cloned mammal, was created, scientists discovered that her telomeres were significantly shorter than those of a naturally born sheep her age. This suggested she may have inherited the "aged" DNA from her donor, potentially leading to early-onset aging and health issues.
While cloning techniques have since improved, telomere shortening remains a debated concern in cloned animals — raising important questions about long-term health, especially in pets and livestock cloned for companionship or agricultural use.

Bucs’ Sack Surge Built on Teamwork, Not Stars

The Buccaneers’ defense is thriving through teamwork, not star power, with 25 sacks—15 in the past three games—ranking them tied for eighth in the NFL.
Outside linebacker Yaya Diaby leads the team with just four sacks, but head coach Todd Bowles applauds the unit’s selfless approach, which has 15 players contributing at least half a sack.
Free-agent signee Haason Reddick was expected to lead the charge but has struggled with injuries and limited production. In his absence, Anthony Nelson earned NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors with two sacks and a touchdown.
Bowles emphasizes pressure from all angles, often requiring players to blitz or drop into coverage. The result? More takeaways—12 so far—and a plus-7 turnover differential, fourth-best in the NFL.
Diaby credits offseason training and technique work, including Pilates, for his improvement. Bowles sees a unit “working together, helping each other out,” with no concern for who gets the glory.
