22 Fires in a Day: Tampa Bay Crews Stretched Thin

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue responded to 22 confirmed brush fires in a single day, marking one of the busiest stretches so far this year. Crews often worked nonstop, moving from one scene to another without returning to their stations.
“We’re trained for it — we’re just not used to it being this early,” said spokesperson Rob Herrin.
The Florida Forest Service’s Lakeland District, covering Pinellas, Hillsborough and Polk counties, answered eight additional calls for assistance.
Officials say dry conditions are accelerating fire spread, urging residents to delay yard debris burning and follow local burn bans.
“It doesn’t take long for a small fire to become devastating,” wildfire mitigation specialist Todd Chlanda warned.

Think Meals First, Spend Less Later, Experts Say

A growing grocery trend known as “backwards shopping” could help families save up to $50 a week.
The strategy, highlighted by Realtor.com, encourages shoppers to plan meals first, check pantry and fridge gaps, and purchase only what’s needed.
Instead of building a cart around random items, shoppers “work backwards” from planned meals. Experts say the method reduces impulse buys and unnecessary spending.
“Only shop for what you need,” said Realtor.com Executive Editor Charlie Lankston.
Food & Wine also recommends choosing budget-friendly staples like potatoes, which stretch meals further at a lower cost.
While the approach requires discipline, financial experts say intentional planning can significantly reduce grocery waste — and shrink receipts.

Healthy Diets May Add Years — No Matter
Your Genes

A major UK study suggests eating well may extend life — regardless of genetic makeup.
Researchers analyzing more than 100,000 participants in the UK Biobank found that strong adherence to five recognized healthy dietary patterns was linked to lower mortality and longer life expectancy.
Participants with the highest diet scores had an 18–24% lower risk of death compared to those with the lowest scores. At age 45, men gained up to three additional years of life, while women gained up to 2.3 years.
Importantly, benefits persisted regardless of genetic predisposition to longevity.
The study, published in Science Advances, reinforces public health guidance promoting balanced, plant-forward diets. While researchers note the findings are observational, they conclude that sustained dietary quality remains a powerful — and accessible — strategy for living longer.

Hedman Eyes Historic Triple Gold at 2026 Olympics

Victor Hedman is one victory away from hockey immortality.
The veteran defenseman for the Tampa Bay Lightning enters the 2026 Winter Olympics with a chance to join the prestigious Triple Gold Club — awarded to players who win a Stanley Cup, Olympic gold medal and IIHF World Championship gold medal. Only 30 players have achieved the feat since 1930.
Hedman already owns two Stanley Cups and a World Championship title. An Olympic gold would make him the 12th defenseman — and fourth Swede — to complete the trifecta.
“That would be the pinnacle,” Hedman said before departing for Italy.
Sweden currently holds a 2-0-0-1 record, with Hedman contributing leadership as an assistant captain and netting an empty-net goal in his Olympic debut.
With a playoff matchup against Latvia looming, Hedman remains focused.
“One game at a time,” he said. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime deal.”
