Keep your finger on the Pulse!
GOOD MORNING
I’m catching up / correcting a few details/errors I noticed in previous editions. I’m betting very few of you will have caught them…. which brings up a memory: Years ago, when I played in the Tampa Bay Symphony, we were doing a Fri night concert, and I was dead tired from a busy week of oral surgery. I was the principal oboist, a part that rather stands out in an orchestra. Because I was dead tired, during a long section of rests in the music, I lost my place, but I started playing where I thought everyone else was in the score. But they weren’t! Needless to say, it was a very embarrassing moment for me, yet the interesting thing was that only one member of the orchestra noticed my faux pas……………………….. yup, the conductor!

Global Virus Network Opens International Headquarters at USF

The Global Virus Network (GVN) has officially opened its International Headquarters at the University of South Florida, strengthening global efforts to combat viral threats. The new hub, located at the USF Health Institute for Translational Virology and Innovation in Tampa, will serve as a central coordination point for scientists working on virus research and pandemic preparedness.
GVN connects leading virologists from more than 90 research centers across over 40 countries. The partnership with USF Health expands the network’s ability to coordinate international collaboration, monitor emerging viruses and accelerate research aimed at improving global outbreak response.
University leaders say the headquarters reinforces Tampa’s growing role in global health research. Officials emphasized that bringing together world-class scientists and clinicians will help translate laboratory discoveries into real-world solutions for viral diseases.
Founded after lessons from the HIV/AIDS pandemic, GVN aims to strengthen global scientific cooperation. Leaders say the new headquarters will help ensure the world is better prepared for future pandemics.
Florida Driver Spends Nearly $600 Fighting $225 School Bus Camera Ticket

Stanley Shultz is appealing a $225 citation issued after a school bus camera recorded him passing a stopped bus in Hillsborough County. Rather than pay the fine, Shultz challenged the ticket in court, saying the evidence shows the bus’s warning lights were not flashing before the stop arm deployed.
So far, the legal fight has cost him significantly more than the fine. His first appeal added a $45 court fee, and a second appeal filing cost $293—bringing his total potential cost to nearly $600. Despite losing his first appeal, Shultz says the issue is about principle and what he believes is a flawed appeals process.
The case comes as Florida lawmakers consider expanding the school bus camera program. A proposed bill would allow charter and private schools to install the cameras, potentially increasing citations across the state.

Daily Multivitamin Linked to Slower Biological Aging, Study Finds

Researchers from Mass General Brigham analyzed data from nearly 1,000 participants in the large COSMOS clinical trial, where adults with an average age of 70 took a daily multivitamin for two years.
Scientists measured biological aging using “epigenetic clocks,” which track subtle chemical changes in DNA linked to aging and overall health. Compared with participants taking a placebo, those taking a multivitamin showed slower aging across all five biological markers studied. The difference equated to roughly four months less biological aging over two years.
The benefits were strongest in participants who were biologically older than their chronological age at the start of the study. Researchers say the findings highlight a potentially simple and accessible approach to healthier aging, though additional studies are needed to determine whether these biological changes translate into long-term health benefits such as improved cognition or reduced disease risk.

Mike Evans Leaves Buccaneers After Historic Run, Signs With 49ers

After 12 standout seasons, star wide receiver Mike Evans is leaving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the San Francisco 49ers. The future Hall of Famer reportedly agreed to a three-year, $60.4 million deal in free agency, ending one of the most productive careers in Buccaneers history.
Evans departs as Tampa Bay’s all-time leader in receiving yards (13,052), receptions (866), and touchdowns (108). The six-time Pro Bowler topped 1,000 receiving yards in 11 of his 12 seasons and helped the team win a Super Bowl. Buccaneers ownership released an emotional statement thanking Evans for both his on-field excellence and his contributions to the Tampa Bay community.
For San Francisco, the signing helps stabilize a wide receiver group after the Brandon Aiyuk situation unraveled. Aiyuk missed the 2025 season with a knee injury and later lost guaranteed money after refusing team activities.
The move could intensify NFC West competition, especially with the Los Angeles Rams investing heavily in new defensive backs.
