DHS Shutdown Triggers Long TSA Lines at Major U.S. Airports

Travelers across the United States are encountering significantly longer TSA security lines as a partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) strains airport staffing during the start of the busy spring break travel season. Reports from several major airports indicate wait times stretching between two and three hours, raising concerns about missed flights and travel disruptions.

Major Airports See Longest Waits

At William P. Hobby Airport in Houston, travelers reported waits of three to three and a half hours, with security lines extending into parking garage areas. Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport advised passengers to arrive three hours early, while Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport saw peak waits of about one hour. George Bush Intercontinental Airport reported average waits around 51 minutes, still above typical levels.

Shutdown Impact Raises Industry Concerns

TSA officers have been working without pay since Feb. 14 due to the DHS funding lapse. Aviation and travel leaders warn the delays could worsen as record spring travel volumes increase pressure on airport security operations.

Northdale Butterfly Garden Earns Top Tampa Bay Environmental Honor

What began as a Facebook group for neighbors trading plants and gardening advice has grown into an award-winning community project. The Northdale Community Butterfly Garden, located outside the Northdale Recreation Center, has been named the Community Water Wise Best Florida Friendly Garden in Tampa Bay by Hillsborough County and the UF/IFAS Extension.

Volunteer Effort Transforms Space

Founded by Cynthia Lantigua and Renata Poetzl, the Northdale Plant Friends group organized residents to transform a neglected plot into a 2,100-square-foot butterfly habitat. About 30 volunteers spent nine months clearing brush, planting butterfly-friendly vegetation and building pathways before the garden officially opened in June 2025.

A Community Project Continues to Grow

Nearly everything in the garden — from plants and mulch to benches and decor — was donated by residents and local businesses, with the entire project costing about $2,000. The group’s online community has grown to nearly 650 members, and volunteers continue improving the garden with irrigation systems and wildlife-friendly features.

Fish Scale Technology Could Ease Global Cornea Donor Shortage

Fish Scales Inspire Breakthrough in Eye Implants

Researchers at the University of Granada have developed a highly biocompatible corneal implant made from recycled fish scales, offering a potential alternative to traditional cornea transplants. The transparent, durable implants are created using scales from commonly available fish such as carp and could help address the global shortage of donor corneas.

New Option for Treating Corneal Disease

Serious corneal conditions are difficult to treat because the cornea lacks blood vessels and has limited ability to repair itself. Currently, many patients rely on donor cornea transplants, which often involve long waiting lists. Laboratory studies and animal trials show the fish-scale material can support corneal repair and regeneration with promising results.

Low-Cost and Widely Available Material

Scientists say the approach could create affordable and accessible implants using a natural resource that is widely available through the fishing industry, potentially benefiting both patients and regional fishing economies.

Nelson Makes Conference History With Rare Triple Award Sweep

University of South Florida forward Izaiyah Nelson delivered a historic season, sweeping the American Conference’s top individual honors—Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and Newcomer of the Year. Nelson becomes the first player in conference history to win all three awards in the same season after averaging 15.8 points and 9.8 rebounds, while recording 18 double-doubles, sixth-most in the NCAA.

Coaching and Team Success

Head coach Bryan Hodgson earned Coach of the Year, guiding the Bulls to 23 regular-season wins, tying a program record and securing the No. 1 seed in the American Conference Tournament. The Bulls also posted a program-best nine road victories while leading the conference in offensive and defensive efficiency.

Record-Breaking Offense

Junior guard Wes Enis joined Nelson on the First Team All-Conference, while Joseph Pinion earned Third Team honors. Enis and Pinion each hit 100 three-pointers, breaking the previous school record and helping South Florida set a program record with 300 team three-pointers while averaging 88.4 points per game.
