Speed Cameras Catch Over 100K Drivers Near Hillsborough Schools

Hillsborough County’s school zone speed camera program has surpassed 100,000 violations since launching in August, highlighting growing concerns about driver safety near schools.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, 104,543 tickets have been issued through March 22, with more than 30,000 occurring in 2026 alone. Cameras are positioned in school zones across the county, including high-traffic areas like Citrus Park Elementary.

The program expanded in September, moving from limited activation during drop-off and pickup times to operating throughout the entire school day. Cameras automatically capture license plates of drivers exceeding the speed limit by 11 mph or more.

Each violation carries a $100 fine, with a portion going to both the county and vendor RedSpeed. Drivers who unsuccessfully contest tickets face additional fees.

Officials emphasize that flashing lights signal reduced speed limits, urging drivers to remain alert and prioritize student safety.

Tampa Businesses Step Up as TSA Agents Miss Paychecks

Tampa Bay businesses are stepping in to support TSA agents as the partial government shutdown leaves many workers without a third consecutive paycheck.

At Tampa International Airport, agents continue reporting to work despite mounting financial strain. Some earn around $40,000 annually, making it difficult to cover basic expenses without steady income. Union leaders say many workers are living paycheck to paycheck, intensifying the impact of missed wages.

Local businesses are offering relief, including Marco’s Pizza, which recently provided meals to roughly 500 TSA agents. Workers say even small gestures help ease the burden for their families.

Despite national reports of long airport lines due to staffing shortages, Tampa Bay airports have avoided major disruptions so far. However, officials warn conditions could worsen if the shutdown continues into the busy summer travel season.

Workers and union leaders stress the need for consistent pay, emphasizing both financial stability and workforce reliability.

Tampa Artist Transforms Scrap Metal into Striking Sculptures

A new Tampa studio is turning heads by transforming everyday metal into imaginative works of art. Modern Art Creations, which opened in February, showcases sculptures made from both raw and recycled materials.

Artist Felipe Lopez aims to challenge perception, encouraging visitors to question what they’re seeing. The studio’s debut exhibition features a diverse mix of humanoid figures, insects, abstract designs, and metal-inspired paintings.

Many pieces incorporate repurposed items like car parts, tools, appliances, and even utensils, blending industrial elements with artistic vision. Some works remain close to their original form, while others are completely reshaped.

Painter Marvin Vega contributed artwork that complements the sculptures, creating a cohesive gallery experience.

Beyond art, the studio’s team also works on local metal fabrication projects. Lopez says the goal is simple: to spark personal connections and memories through art, making each piece meaningful to the viewer.

Rays Shake Up Opening Day Lineup with Bold
No. 2 Pick

The Tampa Bay Rays unveiled their 2026 Opening Day lineup, and manager Kevin Cash introduced a few unexpected decisions ahead of their matchup with St. Louis.

The biggest surprise comes in the No. 2 spot, where utility player Ryan Vilade gets the nod. Despite limited MLB production—just 71 career plate appearances and a .179 wOBA—the Rays appear to be banking on his strong Triple-A performance last season. The move signals clear organizational confidence in his bat.

Veteran Cedric Mullins will start in center field, edging out Jonny DeLuca. Mullins struggled defensively in 2025, posting -14 Defensive Runs Saved across two teams, while DeLuca showed modest efficiency in limited action.

On the mound, Drew Rasmussen makes his first Opening Day start for Tampa Bay, opposing former Rays prospect Matthew Liberatore.

First pitch is set for 4:15 p.m., as Tampa Bay begins its season with a mix of proven talent and calculated risks.
