Lightning Strike Suspected in Devastating USF
St. Pete Lab Fire

A powerful fire, likely sparked by lightning, destroyed a marine science laboratory at University of South Florida St. Petersburg on Saturday.

No injuries were reported, but officials say the loss could be profound. Decades of research, specialized equipment, and critical academic work may have been wiped out as flames consumed the building.

Video captured near Al Lang Stadium appears to show the moment lightning struck around 3:15 p.m., with smoke emerging from the same location roughly two hours later. University leaders say the timing strongly suggests a lightning-related cause.

Nearly 200 firefighters and 69 emergency units responded, battling intense flames—at times glowing green due to burning chemicals.

The fire occurred while the building was empty, likely preventing injuries. Still, the emotional toll is significant, especially for researchers and students whose work was abruptly disrupted. Investigators continue to assess the damage and confirm the cause.

Senate Moves to Block Lawmakers from Betting on Prediction Markets

The U.S. Senate has quietly approved a rule change preventing lawmakers and staff from betting on prediction markets, aiming to curb potential misuse of insider knowledge.

The measure, led by Bernie Moreno, passed unanimously before the chamber’s recess and immediately took effect. It prohibits participation in platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi, where users wager on outcomes ranging from elections to global events.

Supporters say the move strengthens public trust by addressing concerns over lawmakers profiting from privileged information. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer urged the House to adopt similar restrictions.

Prediction market companies have largely backed the change, noting many already restrict participation by members of Congress. The rule follows broader, ongoing debates over whether lawmakers should be allowed to trade stocks while in office.

Efforts are now emerging in the House to implement comparable safeguards.

‘Uncelebrity’ Exhibit Highlights Warhol’s Lesser-Seen Legacy

The University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum presents Uncelebrity: The Warhol Foundation Photographic Legacy Project Reconsidered, offering a fresh perspective on Andy Warhol’s artistic influence.

The exhibition highlights a lesser-known side of Warhol’s legacy through photographic works gifted by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Rather than focusing on fame and celebrity, the show examines themes of identity, observation, and everyday life.

As part of the summer programming, visitors can participate in an interactive experience titled 15 minutes later…, inspired by Warhol’s iconic idea that everyone can achieve 15 minutes of fame. The activity encourages collaboration and creativity, linking multiple exhibits through shared artistic expression.

Admission is free and open to the public, with extended Thursday evening hours. The exhibit invites guests to engage directly with art while reconsidering one of pop culture’s most influential figures.

Tampa Bay Eliminated in First Round for Fourth Straight Year

The Tampa Bay Lightning saw their playoff run end in heartbreak Sunday night, falling 2-1 in Game 7 to the Montreal Canadiens.

Despite outshooting Montreal 29-9, Tampa Bay couldn’t overcome a pair of unusual goals, extending a frustrating trend. This marks the fourth consecutive season the Lightning have been eliminated in the first round.

Head coach Jon Cooper described the aftermath as disbelief, with players struggling to process how the game slipped away. Forward Brandon Hagel echoed the sentiment, noting the team’s strong defensive effort but lack of scoring.

Tampa Bay controlled much of the game, even limiting Montreal to zero shots in the second period, but couldn’t capitalize offensively.

The loss leaves lingering questions for a team with championship expectations, as players now face an offseason of reflection after another early playoff exit.
