Issue #611: England–New Zealand Match Faces Slow Ticket Sales, Tesla Crash in Pasco Pond, Michelin Scene Holds Steady & Tampa Wins Lacrosse Title

Someone just spent $236,000,000 on a painting. Here’s why it matters for your wallet.

Late last year, a Klimt sold for the highest price ever paid for modern art at auction.

An outlier sure, but it wasn't a fluke. U.S. auction sales grew 23.1% in 2025. The $1-5mm segment even grew 40.8% YoY.

Meanwhile, Apollo’s chief economist Torsten Slok said to expect ‘zero in return in the S&P 500 over the coming decade.’

Each environment is unique, but after dot-com, post war and contemporary art grew about 24% annually for a decade. After 2008, about 11% for 12 years.

It’s also had near-zero correlation with the S&P 500 since ‘95.*

Now, Masterworks lets you invest in shares of artworks featuring legends like Banksy, Basquiat, and Picasso.

  • $1.3 billion invested across over 500 artworks.

  • 28 sales to date.

  • Net annualized returns on sold works held 12 months+ like 14.6%, 17.6%, and 17.8%.

Shares can sell quickly, but my subscribers can skip the waitlist:

England vs. New Zealand Match in Tampa Facing Weak Ticket Sales

A World Cup tuneup match featuring England and New Zealand at Raymond James Stadium could be played in front of a surprisingly small crowd next month.

According to reports, only about 13,000 tickets have been sold so far for the June 6 match in Tampa, leaving the possibility of more than 50,000 empty seats inside the NFL-sized venue.

The match is part of England’s final preparations before the World Cup begins later in June. Ticket prices currently start around $72, leading some observers to suggest organizers lower prices to attract more casual fans and families.

England is also scheduled to play another pre-World Cup “friendly” in Orlando on June 10, where attendance has also reportedly lagged expectations.

Despite the slow sales, the Tampa match still gives local soccer fans a rare opportunity to watch one of the world’s most recognizable national teams play in person.

Tesla Operating in Autopilot Mode Plunges Into Pasco Pond, Killing Driver

A Wesley Chapel man, 87, died Tuesday night after his Tesla Model Y reportedly operating in autopilot mode veered off Overpass Road and plunged into a pond, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash happened around 8:10 p.m. near Infinite Drive when the eastbound SUV suddenly departed the roadway. Investigators say the Tesla first struck an electrical box before continuing into a nearby retention pond, where the vehicle became fully submerged.

Emergency crews responded quickly and transported both occupants to a local hospital. The driver later died from injuries sustained in the crash.

A 75-year-old female passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries and remains under medical care.

The Florida Highway Patrol has not released additional details regarding what may have caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. The crash remains under active investigation as authorities continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Tampa Bay’s Michelin Scene Holds Steady as St. Pete Still Awaits First Star

Despite growing national attention for Tampa Bay’s food scene, the 2026 Michelin Guide brought no new stars to the region and St. Petersburg still has not earned its first Michelin-starred restaurant.

Tampa continues to hold four one-star restaurants: Rocca, Koya, Kosen and Ebbe. The city also maintained four Bib Gourmand selections for high-quality meals at moderate prices, including Rooster & The Till, Psomi, Streetlight Taco and Gorkhali Kitchen.

North Tampa and nearby neighborhoods remain strongly represented among Michelin’s recommended restaurants. Tampa Heights and Seminole Heights earned multiple mentions, including Lilac, Bar Terroir, Kinjo, Predalina and Rooster & The Till.

Michelin also highlighted several longtime Tampa favorites such as Bern’s Steak House, Olivia, Ponte and Mise en Place.

Overall, 26 Tampa Bay restaurants received Michelin recommendations this year, reinforcing the area’s growing reputation as one of Florida’s rising culinary destinations.

Overtime Championship Victory Secures Tampa’s Second National Lacrosse Title

The University of Tampa finished the 2026 season atop the final USA Lacrosse Division II Men’s Top 20 after a dramatic overtime victory in the national championship game.

The Spartans defeated Adelphi to capture their second NCAA Division II national title, ending Adelphi’s pursuit of a third straight championship. Tommy Ortega scored the overtime game-winner, helping Tampa secure the No. 1 ranking in the final national poll.

Adelphi finished the season ranked No. 2, followed by Saint Anselm, Anderson and Wingate in the top five.

Florida remained well represented nationally, with Florida Tech finishing No. 14 in the final rankings.

The championship capped a memorable season for Tampa, which battled through one of the nation’s toughest Division II schedules before delivering one of the most dramatic finishes of the year on the national stage.
