Waymo’s Driverless Taxis Prepare for Public Launch Across Tampa

Tampa residents are about to get their first taste of fully autonomous transportation as Waymo prepares to launch its self-driving taxi service to the public.
The company announced that it has begun offering fully driverless rides to employees after spending months testing vehicles throughout Tampa with trained specialists behind the wheel. A public launch date has not yet been announced, but officials say service is expected to open soon.
Initially, Waymo’s operating area will stretch from Sweetwater Creek and Del Rio to West Shore and Palmetto Beach. Riders will travel in the company’s newest vehicle, the Hyundai IONIQ 5, equipped with Waymo’s latest autonomous driving technology.
Before launch, Waymo vehicles mapped local roads, intersections, lane markings and traffic patterns in detail. The company reports its autonomous vehicles have experienced 11 times fewer injury crashes and five times fewer airbag-deployment crashes compared with human-driven vehicles.
Tampa will become one of 12 U.S. cities served by Waymo’s growing robotaxi network.

Conservation Groups Push Federal Action to Safeguard Florida’s Queen Conch

A coalition of environmental advocates has filed a lawsuit seeking stronger protections for the threatened queen conch, a large marine snail known for its distinctive pink spiral shell.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court by the Center for Biological Diversity, argues that the National Marine Fisheries Service has failed to designate critical habitat for the species after it was officially listed as threatened in 2024.
Conservation groups warn that queen conch populations face mounting pressure from overharvesting, pollution, habitat degradation, dredging activities, and climate change. They contend that protecting key habitat areas around Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands is essential for the species’ long-term survival.
The legal action also follows concerns about the ongoing Port Everglades dredging project, which environmental groups say may be causing harmful sediment impacts to nearby reefs and marine habitats.
Advocates hope federal officials will move quickly to establish protections before further population declines occur.

Walmart Turns World Cup Buzz Into VIP Store Tours for International Fans

As millions of visitors travel across the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Walmart is embracing an unexpected role as a tourist attraction.
The retail giant announced it will host VIP guided store tours in New Jersey and Miami, giving international visitors a chance to experience one of America’s most recognizable shopping destinations. Participants will receive custom Walmart passports, aisle stamps, product samples, tour guides, and exclusive swag.
The idea comes after social media videos featuring first-time Walmart visitors generated millions of views. Tourists from Europe, Australia, and elsewhere have been fascinated by the store’s oversized products, massive snack aisles, and distinctly American shopping culture.
The Miami event will coincide with a World Cup quarterfinal match and is being held in partnership with Spain’s LaLiga soccer league.
Marketing experts say the tours are a creative way for Walmart to capitalize on World Cup excitement without being an official FIFA sponsor, while showcasing a uniquely American retail experience.

Women’s Professional Baseball Set for First Season in More Than 70 Years

Professional women’s baseball is making a long-awaited return as the Women’s Professional Baseball League (WPBL) prepares for its inaugural season beginning August 1 in Springfield, Illinois.
The league unveiled the names and logos of its four founding teams: the New York Heights, San Francisco Firebells, Los Angeles Queens, and Boston Hunters. Each nickname honors a pioneering woman who helped shape American history.
Among the league’s early stars are Kelsie Whitmore, the first overall draft pick who will play for the Firebells, and former Little League sensation Mo’ne Davis, who joins the Queens alongside Japanese pitching legend Ayami Sato.
Games will be played at Robin Roberts Stadium through September, culminating in league playoffs.
League officials hope the WPBL will create new opportunities for female athletes while inspiring a new generation of players, much like the legendary All-American Girls Professional Baseball League did decades ago.
The launch marks a significant milestone for women’s professional sports and the continued growth of baseball beyond its traditional boundaries.
