Forecasters Now Predict a Much Quieter Hurricane Season for Florida

Hurricane forecasters have lowered expectations for the 2026 Atlantic season once again, with researchers at Colorado State University now predicting a “well below-normal” year for tropical activity.

The updated outlook calls for just nine named storms, including four hurricanes and one major hurricane, a significant drop from preseason forecasts. So far, the season has produced only one named storm: Tropical Storm Arthur, which made landfall in Texas in June.

Experts point to a strengthening El Niño pattern as the primary reason for the reduced forecast. El Niño increases atmospheric wind shear across the Atlantic, making it more difficult for tropical systems to organize and strengthen.

AccuWeather has also lowered its outlook, now expecting eight to 14 named storms this season.

Despite the encouraging forecast, meteorologists stress that residents should remain prepared. As history has shown, it only takes one hurricane making landfall to have a major impact, regardless of how quiet the overall season may be.

Rays Unveil Stunning Interior Designs for
Planned 2029 Stadium

The Tampa Bay Rays have unveiled new interior renderings of their proposed Tampa ballpark, giving fans a glimpse of what the team hopes will become its “Forever Home” by 2029.

The planned stadium would anchor a larger mixed-use development surrounding a reimagined Hillsborough College Dale Mabry Campus. Renderings show a compact seating bowl designed to keep fans close to the action, along with premium club spaces, bullpen viewing areas, and expansive views of the Tampa skyline.

Among the most eye-catching features are two massive video boards, a center-field social area with an elevated bar, and the return of the popular Rays Touch Tank, which would be larger and deeper than its predecessor.

The ballpark is expected to include approximately 30,000 fixed seats, with flexibility for concerts, conventions, and other major events.

Team officials say the design will continue evolving as discussions with Tampa and Hillsborough County leaders move forward toward a potential funding agreement.

Tampa Residents Split Over Latest Rays Stadium Funding Proposal

A new proposal aimed at advancing the Tampa Bay Rays’ stadium project is generating strong reactions from local residents and taxpayers.

The latest idea would shift $100 million of Tampa’s financial commitment to Hillsborough County, reducing the city’s share while increasing the county’s already substantial contribution. Supporters argue the project could deliver thousands of jobs, increased tourism, higher tax revenues, and long-term economic development, while helping keep Major League Baseball in Tampa Bay.

Critics, however, question whether taxpayers should shoulder additional costs for a project benefiting private ownership. Some residents say public dollars would be better spent on infrastructure improvements, including roads and transportation needs throughout the city.

Others have raised concerns about the financial transparency of the Rays’ ownership group and whether sufficient private funding has been secured.

The proposed stadium is part of a larger mixed-use redevelopment near Hillsborough College’s Dale Mabry campus, a project supporters describe as potentially transformative for the region.

Expect More Fighter Jet Noise Around Tampa Bay Through July 22

Tampa Bay residents may notice more military aircraft overhead and increased jet noise over the next two weeks as MacDill Air Force Base hosts scheduled F-18 training operations.

Base officials announced that the heightened activity is expected to continue through July 22, with the busiest periods occurring between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Residents near MacDill and throughout the Tampa Bay region could see and hear more fighter jets than usual during those hours.

The training involves the F/A-18 Hornet, a twin-engine supersonic fighter aircraft used by the U.S. military for both air-to-air combat and ground attack missions. The aircraft has been a key part of military operations since entering service in the 1980s.

MacDill officials emphasized that the flights are part of routine training exercises designed to maintain pilot readiness and operational preparedness. The temporary increase in aircraft activity is expected to return to normal after the training period concludes.
