K-Bar Ranch’s $8 Million Community Park Moves One Step Closer to Reality

After more than 20 years of anticipation, K-Bar Ranch’s long-promised community park is finally approaching reality, with the Tampa City Council expected to vote next month on approximately $8 million to build the 56-acre park in New Tampa.

If approved, Skanska Construction will lead the design-build process, while residents hope to influence the final layout before plans are completed. Community leaders are advocating for early input on features including a multi-use field that accommodates cricket, walking trails, playgrounds, picnic areas, restrooms, parking, and expanded lake access with a possible fishing pier.

Residents also favor locating active amenities away from nearby homes to reduce traffic and noise while preserving the park's natural setting. More than 10,000 trees have already been planted, signaling visible progress on a project that has been promised since the early 2000s and is now closer than ever to becoming a reality for K-Bar Ranch families.

Fresh Market Appears Headed to Wesley Chapel in Major Retail Expansion

One of the largest remaining undeveloped corners along S.R. 56 is moving closer to construction, as plans move forward for a 59-acre retail development at Wiregrass Ranch anchored by what is widely expected to be The Fresh Market.

Although the grocery chain has not officially confirmed the location, site plans include a 26,187-square-foot grocery store, matching the typical size of a Fresh Market, along with two restaurant outparcels, nearly 30 retail suites, and additional dining space. The project will ultimately include 10 parcels, with only the first phase currently submitted for county review.

The upscale grocery chain is known for its premium meats, fresh produce, prepared meals, seafood and specialty foods, offering a boutique shopping experience unlike traditional supermarkets.

Traffic improvements and future roadway connections remain under review, while additional retail, restaurant and commercial announcements are expected as the remaining parcels move through the approval process.

Cult-Favorite Big Dave's Cheesesteaks Expands
Into Tampa Bay

Big Dave's Cheesesteaks is bringing its first Tampa Bay location to East Fowler Avenue, with a late-August opening planned near the University of South Florida. The fast-casual chain, inspired by West Philadelphia, is known for serving halal-certified beef, chicken and salmon cheesesteaks on authentic Amoroso rolls, along with loaded Philly fries, cheesesteak egg rolls and banana pudding.

Founded in 2014 by Derrick Hayes, the restaurant has grown from a Georgia gas station storefront into one of the nation's fastest-growing chains, earning the No. 4 spot on the 2026 Fast Casual Top 100 Movers & Shakers list. The Tampa restaurant will replace the former Little Greek Fresh Grill at 2548 E. Fowler Ave.

Local franchise operators say Tampa's thriving food scene made the area an ideal choice as the brand continues its expansion across the Southeast.

Bucs Star Vita Vea Seeks Trade Ahead of Final Contract Year

Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea has requested a trade after contract extension talks reportedly stalled with Tampa Bay, placing the future of one of the franchise's top defensive players in doubt.

The 31-year-old, a two-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion, is entering the final season of his four-year, $71 million contract and is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2026 season. While Vea is expected to report to training camp, his participation remains uncertain as negotiations continue.

Despite the trade request, Tampa Bay is under no obligation to move him, and many similar NFL situations have ultimately ended with new contract agreements. However, if the Buccaneers decide against a long-term extension—especially with quarterback Baker Mayfield also due for a future payday—they could explore trading Vea while his value remains high ahead of the regular season.

Astonishing Salary Cap Fact: The NHL Once Lost a Stanley Cup Champion to the Salary Cap

One of the least-known consequences of salary caps happened after the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals. The Chicago Blackhawks won the championship but were forced to break up much of their roster just days later because the NHL's hard salary cap made it impossible to keep the team together.

The Blackhawks traded or lost key contributors including Dustin Byfuglien, Kris Versteeg, Andrew Ladd, Brent Sopel, Ben Eager, Brent Fraser and Antti Niemi within months of winning the Cup. The roster overhaul wasn't driven by poor performance—it was required to comply with the league's salary rules.

Unlike leagues with luxury taxes, the NHL's hard cap offers virtually no way to exceed the limit, meaning a championship team can be dismantled almost immediately after reaching the sport's highest achievement.

It's one of the rare cases in professional sports where winning a title directly accelerated the breakup of the championship roster.
