Tampa Bay Still Faces 14-Inch Rainfall Deficit Despite Recent Downpours

Recent rainfall has provided a welcome boost to Tampa Bay's water supply, but officials say the region remains deep in drought after falling nearly 14 inches below normal annual rainfall. Tampa Bay Water, which serves Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties, has relied heavily on groundwater after rivers became too low to replenish regional reservoirs.

For the first time in months, recent storms have allowed water to begin flowing back into the regional reservoir, which currently holds just over 2 billion gallons. Officials hope to increase storage to about 15 billion gallons by October, though that goal depends on continued rainfall.

Tampa Bay Water General Manager Chuck Carden said sustained river flows are essential to reduce pressure on groundwater supplies. Officials caution that several months of consistent rainfall—not just a few storms—will be needed before local water sources fully recover from the prolonged drought.

New Tampa Boulevard First in City's Latest Million-Dollar Road Improvement Push

A major $1 million resurfacing project is underway on New Tampa Boulevard, bringing smoother roads and safety upgrades to one of the community's busiest corridors. Crews are repaving nearly two miles of roadway between Meadow Pine Drive and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, a route used by about 12,000 drivers each day.

To minimize disruptions, most construction will take place overnight, allowing completed sections to reopen each morning. The project, expected to finish within two months, also includes new pavement markings and ADA-compliant pedestrian curb ramps to improve accessibility and safety.

The effort is part of Tampa's long-term roadway improvement program, which has repaved nearly 340 lane-miles since 2019, focusing first on streets in the poorest condition. City Councilman Luis Viera said the investment reflects the city's commitment to providing New Tampa residents with a high-quality roadway along one of the area's most heavily traveled boulevards.

Public Backlash Prompts Hillsborough Schools to Restore Previous Dress Code

The Hillsborough County School Board voted 5-1 to restore last year's student dress code, reversing restrictions on leggings that sparked widespread criticism from parents and students. The policy approved last month required leggings or spandex to be covered by clothing extending to mid-thigh, but board members said public feedback raised concerns that the rule unfairly targeted female students.

Board members Jessica Vaughn and Vice Chair Nadia Combs said they received hundreds of emails opposing the change. Wharton High School sophomore Jessica Eagle told the board she felt the policy placed girls' bodies under unnecessary scrutiny.

The lone dissenting vote came from Patti Rendon, who argued the restrictions addressed coverage concerns for all students, regardless of gender.

Board members plan to revisit the entire dress code during a policy workshop on September 29. The board also unanimously approved terminating the charters of four schools due to financial and enrollment challenges.

A 138-year-old chapel in Dunedin is drawing visitors eager to explore both local history and reports of paranormal activity. The Historic Andrews Memorial Chapel, built in 1888, has been relocated three times and was famously cut in half during a preservation effort in the 1970s before being reassembled in Hammock Park.

Ghost tour company Silent Slayer Ghost Tours regularly brings investigators armed with spirit boxes, EMF meters and dowsing rods to search for evidence of unexplained activity. Some participants believe the chapel is haunted by figures connected to its past, including a carpenter who reportedly died during construction.

Founder Cynthia Dominick says she encourages skepticism and careful evaluation of any findings, emphasizing that the tours are as much about preserving history as exploring the paranormal.

Today, the restored chapel hosts weddings, concerts, theatrical performances and occasional ghost investigations, making it one of Tampa Bay's most unusual historic attractions.
