Federal Officials See Port Tampa Bay as Future Caribbean and Asian Shipping Hub

Port Tampa Bay is getting a federal boost aimed at strengthening its shipbuilding workforce and positioning the region for expanded maritime business.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced a $1 million Small Shipyard Grant for Gulf Marine Repair during a Tampa visit Monday. The funding will support welder training and upgrades to shipyard infrastructure and equipment, with officials hoping to attract more workers and jobs.
The grant is part of a $35 million nationwide investment in commercial shipbuilding and cargo shipping capacity. Federal officials said Tampa has the potential to become a significant shipping hub serving the Caribbean and Asia as planned port expansion and dredging projects advance.
Duffy also previewed another major transportation investment: $16.5 million expected for the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority to manufacture a new 249-passenger ferry connecting Tampa and St. Petersburg.
Officials said designing and building the new vessel will take several years.

Jonas Brothers Add Tampa Stop After Sold-Out
New York Shows

The Jonas Brothers are bringing their latest tour to Tampa after an enthusiastic response to a series of sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden prompted a 45-city expansion across the country.
Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas will perform at Benchmark International Arena on Sunday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m., following Florida stops in Miami and Orlando. The newly expanded run is called “The Burning Up Tour All Over Again.”
Magnus Ferrell and Deleasa are expected to join the brothers as special guests during the tour.
Tickets go on sale Tuesday, Aug. 18, at 8:28 a.m. Eligible Spotify Premium top fans will have access to reserved tickets before the general public sale.
Several VIP packages will also be offered, with select packages providing access to the pre-show Burnin’ Up VIP Lounge and early merchandise shopping as the trio revisits fan favorites on its nationwide tour.
Country, Rock and Rodeo Collide in Tampa for Star-Studded Weekend

A major mix of rodeo action, country music and rock is coming to Tampa next year as Hondo Rodeo Fest makes its first Florida appearance at Raymond James Stadium Feb. 26–28.
The three-day festival will feature world champion cowboys and cowgirls competing for a $1 million purse, along with concerts and a western-themed fan fest.
Cody Johnson and Jon Pardi open the weekend Friday, Feb. 26. Nickelback headlines Saturday with Dexter & The Moonrocks, while Jason Aldean and The Red Clay Strays close the festival Sunday as co-headliners.
The Tampa event marks a major expansion for Hondo Rodeo Fest, combining professional rodeo competition with nationally known musical acts.
Presale tickets will be available Aug. 26–27, with a limited number discounted 25%. General sales begin Aug. 28, with discounts of up to 20% available through Oct. 2.

Bucs Undrafted Rookie Makes Pick-Six — But His Greatest Save Came Off the Field

Undrafted Buccaneers rookie Ayden Garnes delivered one of Tampa Bay’s biggest preseason moments, but his most meaningful contribution came long before he reached the NFL.
The cornerback returned an interception 47 yards for a touchdown in Tampa Bay’s 24-16 preseason victory over the New York Jets, strengthening his case for a roster spot as injuries have thinned the Bucs’ secondary.
Head coach Todd Bowles praised Garnes’ growing confidence while emphasizing his continued development within the defensive system.
But Garnes’ remarkable story extends beyond football. While playing at Duquesne, he became a bone marrow donor, helping save the life of a young mother. The procedure sidelined him for about three weeks and kept him out of winter workouts, a sacrifice Garnes says he would make again.
Now competing for the Bucs’ 53-man roster, Garnes says he arrived in Tampa with one goal: to win a job, regardless of his position on the depth chart.
