TPA Sticks With TSA Workforce After Studying Private Security Alternative

Tampa International Airport has decided to keep federal TSA officers at its security checkpoints, ending a months-long review of the agency’s new Gold+ screening partnership program.

Gold+ would have allowed a private company and workforce to conduct passenger screening under TSA oversight, replacing federal officers at checkpoints. TPA said it explored the option after being invited by TSA earlier this year.

Airport leaders evaluated whether the program could reduce disruptions during government shutdowns, improve access to new screening technology and enhance the passenger experience. Officials also reviewed security, workforce, financial, legal and operational issues before declining to participate.

TPA CEO Michael Stephens said the airport approached the decision carefully and remains committed to its TSA partnership. Federal TSA officers will continue screening passengers at Tampa International, including during peak travel periods, severe weather and other operational challenges.

Tampa Could Join Hillsborough’s Push to Register Short-Term Vacation Rentals

Tampa could create its first registry for short-term vacation rentals, using a proposed Hillsborough County program as a model for bringing greater oversight to properties operating through services such as Airbnb and VRBO.

City Council Chair Alan Clendenin says Tampa currently doesn’t know how many short-term rentals operate within city limits, describing the market as a “Wild, Wild West” that can contribute to neighborhood disruptions and housing concerns.

Hillsborough’s proposal would require an estimated 3,000 rentals in unincorporated areas to register annually, provide a responsible contact available around the clock and document proper state licensing and tourist-tax registration.

The county is considering a $200 annual fee, potentially generating about $600,000 yearly for administration, monitoring and inspections.

County commissioners are scheduled to consider the ordinance Sept. 2, with implementation proposed for Jan. 1, 2027. Tampa would need to adopt its own ordinance to participate.

Dengue Fever Hits Tampa Bay: Hillsborough Reports Eight Locally Acquired Cases

Florida health officials have confirmed 11 locally acquired dengue fever cases across three Tampa Bay-area counties this August, prompting expanded mosquito-control efforts.

Hillsborough County has reported eight cases, while Pinellas has two and Citrus County confirmed its first case Aug. 22. Citrus officials are responding with truck fogging, aerial larviciding and inspections of mosquito breeding sites.

Dengue is a viral illness transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito. Fever is the most common symptom, sometimes accompanied by pain behind the eyes, muscle or joint aches, nausea, vomiting and rash.

Most people recover in about a week, and there is no specific medication for dengue. Health officials recommend residents reduce their risk by using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and eliminating standing water around homes, where mosquitoes can breed. Anyone whose symptoms worsen should contact a health care provider.

Bucs Edge Chiefs 16-15 as Jalon Daniels and Defense Shine in Preseason Win

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers edged the Kansas City Chiefs 16-15 in preseason action at Raymond James Stadium, with several young players strengthening their cases for roster spots.

Quarterback Jalon Daniels completed 9 of 14 passes for 71 yards and a touchdown, earning a 100.6 passer rating while adding 19 rushing yards. Sean Tucker contributed 23 yards and a touchdown on five carries.

Tampa Bay’s defense produced several standouts. Anthony Nelson recorded 1.5 sacks, Caden Fordham collected seven tackles, and John Bullock added a forced fumble. Rashad Wisdom led the defense with nine tackles, while Roman Parodie grabbed an interception.

The biggest concern was an injury-depleted offensive line that struggled in pass protection and received the article’s lowest grade, a D-minus. Overall, the quarterbacks, defensive line and linebackers each earned B-plus grades, helping Tampa Bay secure another encouraging preseason victory.
