Tampa Wastewater Plant Cited After Millions of Gallons Discharged Into Hillsborough Bay

Tampa has reached a nearly $590,000 settlement with Florida environmental regulators over unauthorized discharges, water-quality violations and odor problems at the Howard F. Curren Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant.

State records show the city failed treated-water quality standards more than 80 times between 2022 and 2025. During the 2024 hurricanes, nearly 13 million gallons of untreated wastewater and another 2.9 million gallons of partially treated wastewater entered Hillsborough Bay. Additional discharges occurred outside the storms.

Instead of paying the settlement as a fine, Tampa will fund stationary generators at two wastewater pump stations, with installation expected within two to three years.

Officials say equipment problems contributed to sewage odors reported by nearby Palmetto Beach residents. Since the April settlement, Tampa has incurred another $32,000 in penalties following additional discharges. The city says aging infrastructure remains a concern, with 60% of its pipes at least 60 years old.

Florida’s Four-Month Outdoor Gear Tax Holiday Starts Sept. 1

Florida shoppers will soon get an extended break on outdoor recreation purchases. The state’s 2026 Hunting, Fishing and Camping Sales Tax Holiday begins Sept. 1 and continues through Dec. 31, covering a wide range of qualifying equipment.

Camping exemptions include flashlights and lanterns priced at $30 or less, sleeping bags and portable chairs up to $50, and tents costing $200 or less. Fishing gear also qualifies within price limits, including rods and reels up to $75 each or $150 for matched sets.

Unlike many other tax holidays, qualifying hunting equipment has no purchase-price ceiling. Eligible items include firearms, ammunition, bows, crossbows and numerous accessories.

The four-month holiday was approved as part of Florida’s 2026–27 sales tax package. State officials estimate the exemptions will reduce state and local tax collections by approximately $40 million while providing savings for outdoor enthusiasts statewide.

Baker Mayfield Sounds Alarm After Bucs Struggle Against Jaguars

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers received a preseason wake-up call during their first joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and quarterback Baker Mayfield wasn’t pleased with what he saw.

Tampa Bay’s offense struggled with missed throws and interceptions, while the defense had difficulty slowing Jacksonville. Mayfield said the Jaguars “out-physicaled us” and acknowledged that if the session had been a full game, Tampa Bay probably would not have won.

Mayfield also noted players were “huffing and puffing” in the heat, saying the team needs to improve its conditioning and physicality as the regular season approaches.

The difficult session carries extra intrigue because Jacksonville is coached by former Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen, who left Tampa Bay for the Jaguars’ head coaching job.

For the Bucs, the next practices provide an immediate test: respond to the disappointing performance and show they can match Jacksonville’s intensity.
