Nearly 60 Hillsborough Dengue Cases Reported as Possible Death Is Investigated

Florida health officials are investigating the death of a Hillsborough County resident that may be connected to dengue fever, as Tampa Bay remains the center of the state’s locally acquired outbreak. The person is reportedly an 80-year-old Tampa woman, though the Florida Department of Health says case details are confidential.

As of last week, Florida had nearly 70 locally acquired dengue cases, including almost 60 in Hillsborough County. Pinellas had five cases, Pasco two and Citrus one.

Dengue is spread by mosquitoes and usually is not fatal, but some infections can progress to severe disease. Symptoms may include fever, flu-like illness and intense “bone-breaking” pain.

Hillsborough County is increasing mosquito control efforts, with spraying planned in South Tampa, Hyde Park, Ybor City and Town ’N Country. Residents are urged to use repellent, wear protective clothing and eliminate standing water around their homes.

Two Tampa Teachers Injured as Lightning Strikes School During Dismissal

Two teachers were injured when lightning struck Leadership Technology Academy in Hillsborough County as severe storms moved through the Tampa area. The teachers were outside helping students reach their parents’ vehicles when thunder prompted staff to head indoors.

Before everyone could take cover, lightning struck the building. One teacher holding an umbrella felt a tingling sensation travel through his arm and hand, while another was near an aluminum awning. Both were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No students were hurt.

The strike left three holes in the school’s roof, damaged air-conditioning units in three classrooms and knocked out the communication system. Students were immediately relocated to another building, and classes were canceled the following day for repairs.

Following the incident, administrators said weather safety procedures would be reevaluated, with everyone required to remain indoors when thunderstorms threaten.

Locals Push Back as Tampa Bay Parking Fees Reach $45 Downtown and $7 an Hour at Beaches

Parking costs across Tampa Bay are climbing sharply, prompting some residents to skip downtown attractions, restaurants and beaches altogether. One visitor recently encountered a $45 parking charge near Sparkman Wharf, while parking in Pass-a-Grille can reach $7 an hour.

Officials say the increases reflect a basic problem: demand for parking is rising while available spaces remain limited. Tampa’s parking director says growth around Water Street, Hyde Park, South Tampa and Armature Works has steadily increased demand since the pandemic.

Residents also complain about unpredictable surge pricing at privately operated lots. Meanwhile, Pinellas County has considered raising parking at Fort De Soto, Sand Key and Fred Howard parks to $3.50 an hour.

The broader challenge is transportation: Tampa Bay’s sprawling geography and limited mass-transit options leave many residents dependent on cars, making rising parking prices difficult to avoid.

Tampa General Named One of America’s Top 20 Workplaces for Innovators

Tampa General Hospital has been ranked No. 20 on Fast Company’s 2026 Best Workplaces for Innovators list, placing the Tampa academic health system among 100 organizations recognized for fostering employee-driven innovation.

One example came from five infusion nurses who proposed a dedicated “Fast Track” for patients receiving treatments lasting 30 minutes or less. After testing, the approach cut average wait times from as long as two to four hours to about 14 minutes. The winning team received $50,000 to implement the idea.

Tampa General has also expanded its innovation investments, increasing its TGH Ventures fund from $10 million to $25 million and opening a 32,000-square-foot Innovation Center in Ybor City.

Technology plays a major role, too. Tampa General says AI-powered predictive analytics have reduced sepsis mortality by more than half, while AI assistants have handled more than 2 million calls and increased appointment capacity by 21%.
