Tampa Theatre Celebrates 100 Years With Week of Centennial Events

Tampa Theatre will mark its 100th anniversary with a week of special events Oct. 10-15, launching a year-long celebration of the historic downtown movie palace.

Festivities begin with an Oct. 10 members-only preview of the restored Duncan Auditorium, followed by a free public open house Oct. 11 featuring tours and a new digital guide. Classic films return Oct. 12-14 with screenings of “Casablanca,” “The Wizard of Oz” and “A Night at the Opera.”

The centerpiece arrives Oct. 15, exactly 100 years after Tampa Theatre opened in 1926. The birthday celebration includes live music, swing dancing, champagne and a screening of Buster Keaton’s silent comedy “Sherlock Jr.,” accompanied by the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra and the theater’s Mighty Wurlitzer organ.

The evening concludes with Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture,” recreating part of the theater’s original opening-night program. Public ticket sales begin Sept. 18.

Legendary Tampa Am Skateboarding Competition Returns for 32nd Year

One of skateboarding’s most celebrated amateur competitions returns to the Skatepark of Tampa Oct. 15-18 for the 32nd annual Tampa Am, drawing rising competitors from around the world.

Founded in 1995, Tampa Am has developed a reputation for identifying future stars. Past winners include Olympic bronze medalist Nyjah Huston, Felipe Gustavo and Lazer Crawford, who competed before becoming prominent professional skateboarders.

The four-day event begins Thursday with free practice viewing and an open Town Bowl Jam. Friday features a 150-skater Last Chance qualifier competing for 30 spots, followed Saturday by additional qualifiers, a best-trick contest and nighttime concrete jam.

Competition culminates Sunday with the Tampa Am finals and champion’s podium ceremony at 5 p.m.

The weekend also includes an art show, live music, costume contest and parties. Tickets start at $10, with Thursday offering free spectator opportunities.

Fast-Growing Bubbakoo’s Burritos Adds Second Pasco County Restaurant

A fast-growing Mexican-fusion restaurant chain has expanded its Tampa Bay footprint with the opening of a new Bubbakoo’s Burritos location in Wesley Chapel.

The locally owned and operated restaurant opened Sept. 16 and becomes Bubbakoo’s second Pasco County location, joining an existing restaurant in Zephyrhills. The chain also operates Tampa Bay-area locations in Plant City and Riverview.

Founded in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, in 2008, Bubbakoo’s has expanded to more than 140 locations across 17 states. Its customizable menu features burritos, bowls, tacos and quesadillas, along with fusion creations such as Nashville Hot Crispy Chicken and Pineapple Express burritos.

The Wesley Chapel opening coincides with a new fall menu featuring fried cauliflower and apple pie egg rolls.

As part of the grand-opening promotion, the first 30 customers making a qualifying purchase receive free burritos for a year — one per month.

Taco Bell’s founder, Glen Bell, didn’t invent his famous hard-shell taco recipe himself—he learned the technique from the owners of a small Mexican restaurant across the street, who reportedly showed him how they prepared tacos after he repeatedly visited their kitchen. Bell later turned the concept into a franchise empire with thousands of restaurants worldwide.

Baker Mayfield Faces Former Team as Browns Visit Tampa

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers return to Raymond James Stadium for their 2026 home opener Sunday at 1 p.m. against the Cleveland Browns, with both teams searching for their first victory.

Tampa Bay fell 33-27 at Cincinnati after four lost fumbles contributed to 24 Bengals points. Baker Mayfield accounted for three of those fumbles and now faces his former Cleveland team for the first time since joining the Bucs.

Protecting Mayfield will also be a priority after Cincinnati recorded four sacks and pressured him on 11 of 28 dropbacks. Tampa Bay’s revamped pass rush managed only one sack in the opener.

The Bucs will look to build on strong Week One performances from Bucky Irving, Jeremiah Trotter and Zyon McCollum. Cleveland also enters 0-1 after a 34-10 loss to Jacksonville. Tampa Bay is trying to avoid its first 0-2 start since 2014.
