$5.5 Billion Brightline Restructuring Adds Uncertainty to Tampa Rail Plans

Brightline’s parent companies filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Sept. 24 to restructure $5.5 billion in debt, adding uncertainty to the proposed Orlando-to-Tampa rail extension that could eventually benefit Wesley Chapel commuters.

The filing does not affect Brightline’s existing Miami-to-Orlando trains, which continue operating normally. The company says the entity holding development rights for the Tampa extension also remains outside the bankruptcy. Brightline secured $490 million in new financing as part of its restructuring.

Brightline says it still intends to pursue the Tampa connection, but no final route, station location or construction schedule has been approved. No Wesley Chapel-area stop has been announced.

For residents who regularly face congestion on I-75 and SR 56, the extension could eventually provide another transportation option between Tampa and Orlando. For now, the bankruptcy adds financial uncertainty to a project already without a firm construction timetable.

Tampa Named One of America’s Top 10 Foodie Cities for Second Straight Year

Tampa’s growing culinary reputation has earned another national honor, with WalletHub ranking the city No. 7 among America’s Best Foodie Cities for 2026 — the same position Tampa held last year.

Researchers compared more than 180 U.S. cities using 28 measures, including grocery costs, restaurant quality and variety, food festivals and other factors affecting food lovers. Tampa received an overall score of 68.40 out of 100.

While Tampa ranked just 78th for affordability, it performed considerably better for the dining experience itself, placing ninth nationally for food diversity, accessibility and quality.

Florida placed three cities in the national top 10. Miami ranked No. 1 overall, Orlando finished sixth and Tampa seventh, ahead of Las Vegas, Sacramento and Denver.

The showing adds to Tampa’s emergence as a culinary destination, with its mix of restaurants, cultural influences and food-focused events helping it compete with some of America’s best-known dining cities.

ZooTampa Unveils New ‘Scared of the Dark’
Haunt for Halloween

ZooTampa is getting spooky for Halloween as Creatures of the Night returns on select evenings through Oct. 31, combining family-friendly fun, animal education and scares designed for different ages.

This year’s biggest addition is “Scared of the Dark,” a new haunt geared toward tweens, teenagers and adults — plus adventurous younger visitors. Guests encounter nightmare-inspired scenes featuring vampires, mummies, spiders, aliens, werewolves, life-sized voodoo dolls and even walls that appear to come alive.

Families seeking gentler thrills can visit Ghostly Groves, designed as an introductory haunted experience with playful ghosts, grumpy farmers, a schoolhouse and a cemetery filled with silly names. Animal conservation and education remain part of the festivities.

Creatures of the Night runs from 4–10 p.m. on select dates through Halloween, with tickets priced at $35–$40, offering Tampa Bay families a seasonal alternative to scarier haunted attractions.

Rock Legends Dinosaur Jr. Headed to Tampa Bay With New Album

Alternative-rock veterans Dinosaur Jr. are headed to Jannus Live in St. Petersburg on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2027, bringing their famously loud guitar-driven sound and a new album to Tampa Bay.

The influential trio features founding members J. Mascis, Lou Barlow and drummer Emmett “Murph” Murphy. Mascis, known for his distinctive guitar work, has led the band through a career stretching back to 1985, when the group originally performed simply as Dinosaur before adding “Jr.” to its name.

The St. Petersburg performance is expected to feature music from the band’s new album, There Near, alongside selections from its extensive catalog spanning more than four decades.

Los Angeles rock quartet Starcrawler will open the show. Tickets remain available starting at $52.89.

Dinosaur Jr. joins a growing lineup of newly announced Tampa Bay concerts, with 21 Savage, Tauk and The Lemon Twigs also scheduled for upcoming area appearances.

Rays Earn Playoff Bye, Will Host Yankees or Red Sox at Tropicana Field

The Tampa Bay Rays will begin their postseason run at Tropicana Field after a 98-win season earned them the American League’s top seed and a first-round playoff bye.

The Rays advance directly to the American League Division Series, where they will face either the New York Yankees or Boston Red Sox, depending on the winner of their Wild Card matchup. MLB has announced start times for the first two games in St. Petersburg: Game 1 is Saturday, Oct. 3 at 6:30 p.m., followed by Game 2 on Monday, Oct. 5 at 8 p.m.

Tampa Bay secured its playoff berth earlier this month on Junior Caminero’s walk-off home run against Houston and later clinched the AL East with a 6-1 victory over the Yankees.

The postseason appearance caps a standout regular season and gives the Rays home-field advantage as they pursue another deep October run.
