New USF Technology Could Change How Researchers Understand Glaucoma

University of South Florida researchers have developed a first-of-its-kind wireless system that continuously monitors eye pressure, revealing previously hidden patterns that could deepen scientists’ understanding of glaucoma.

Led by USF Health professor Christopher Passaglia, the research found that eye pressure follows a daily circadian rhythm and rises at night, driven partly by neural signals traveling from the brain to the eye. Traditional eye exams typically capture only a single daytime measurement, potentially missing these fluctuations.

In studies involving rats, which have eye-pressure rhythms similar to humans, researchers also found that constant light disrupted the normal pressure rhythm and increased average eye pressure. The findings do not suggest artificial light causes glaucoma in people.

Although the research will not immediately change glaucoma treatment, it could help scientists understand why pressure varies, how the brain regulates it and whether the timing of future treatments could affect their effectiveness.

A Wartime Minting Mistake Turned This 1943 Penny Into a $235,000 Treasure

A penny tucked away in an old coin jar could be worth a fortune. During World War II, the U.S. Mint switched from copper to zinc-coated steel for 1943 Lincoln cents to conserve copper for the war effort, producing more than a billion steel pennies.

But a small number of leftover bronze blanks accidentally entered the presses and received the 1943 date. Today, only about 20 genuine 1943 bronze cents are estimated to exist, with one recently certified by Professional Coin Grading Service and valued at $235,000.

Collectors should be cautious: PCGS says the 1943 bronze cent is among the coins it sees most frequently misidentified, with most submissions proving to be ordinary steel cents or copper-plated counterfeits.

The rarity has fascinated Americans for decades. One genuine example was reportedly discovered by a teenager in 1947 after receiving it as change in his high school cafeteria.

Bern’s Pairs Elite Whiskey, Fine Dining and Charity for Anniversary Series

Bern’s Steak House is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Whiskey Tampa Foxtrot with six consecutive nights of rare whiskey, elaborate food pairings and philanthropy from Nov. 9–14.

The Tampa landmark will welcome leading distillers and producers representing Booker’s, Willett, Rare Character, Garrison Brothers and WhistlePig. Each intimate dinner pairs limited releases and Bern’s private selections with multi-course menus from Chef de Cuisine Brent Hunt, Pastry Chef Hannah Thomas and the Bern’s culinary team. Featured dishes include whiskey-aged Japanese Wagyu tenderloin, foie gras and chilled lobster.

Dinner prices range from $375 to $425 per person, with tickets sold only in pairs beginning 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3.

Proceeds from the dinners and an accompanying online auction will benefit Operation Healing Forces and the Navy SEAL Foundation through the Laxer Family Foundation, combining Bern’s celebrated hospitality with support for veterans.

Tampa Bay Sports Stars Align for Rare Six-Team Home Weekend

Tampa Bay sports fans are getting an exceptionally rare weekend as all five of the region’s professional teams, plus USF football, play at home, creating a convergence that may be unprecedented locally.

The action begins Saturday, Oct. 3, with the Lightning’s regular-season home opener, Rays AL Division Series Game 1, USF football and the Tampa Bay Rowdies all scheduled within a 90-minute span. Sunday brings the Buccaneers hosting Green Bay and Tampa Bay Sun FC facing Lexington SC.

The weekend stretches into Monday, when the Lightning host Philadelphia at 6 p.m. and the Rays play ALDS Game 2 at 8 p.m.

Such a lineup is extraordinarily difficult because baseball’s postseason and hockey’s opening weeks barely overlap, while the Bucs and USF currently share Raymond James Stadium. With eight home games across three days, Tampa Bay becomes a sports fan’s dream destination.
