From Mexico to Tampa Bay: Authorities Dismantle Major Cocaine Operation

Florida authorities announced the dismantling of a major Sinaloa cartel-linked cocaine trafficking network supplying drugs to Tampa Bay, following a multistate investigation involving 12 suspects.

The operation began July 11 when Pinellas County detectives arrested alleged local ringleader Daniel Pinales while receiving 132 pounds of cocaine worth approximately $2.1 million. Investigators traced shipments from Mexico through Texas, where traffickers allegedly concealed drugs using commercial trucks transporting inoperable farm tractors.

Authorities say Pinales stored cocaine in Hillsborough County stash houses before distributing it throughout the region. Subsequent investigations uncovered additional cocaine and methamphetamine shipments.

Ten defendants face racketeering-related charges, with several potentially facing life imprisonment. Alleged cartel second-in-command Erick Manuel Gomez Tapia remains jailed in Texas on a $30 million bond.

Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri called it the largest seizure involving a single county drug trafficker in 40 years.

From No. 30 to No. 4: Tampa Makes Huge Leap
in High-Wage Jobs

Tampa has skyrocketed to No. 4 nationally for high-wage job growth, jumping from No. 30 last year, according to the Lightcast 2026 Talent Attraction Report.

The Tampa metropolitan area also maintained its No. 10 overall ranking for talent among America's largest metropolitan areas for the second consecutive year.

The Tampa Bay Economic Development Council defines high-wage positions as jobs paying more than $66,477 annually, highlighting the region's growing appeal to employers seeking skilled workers.

During fiscal year 2026, the EDC completed 22 economic development projects, including eight new company recruitments and 14 business expansions. Those projects are expected to generate 1,888 jobs and more than $221 million in investment across Hillsborough County.

Local workforce initiatives, including partnerships with Junior Achievement of Tampa Bay, are helping connect students and job seekers with career training, internships, and apprenticeships to sustain the region's economic momentum.

Heritage Golf Group Adds Fox Hollow to Growing Tampa Bay Golf Empire

Fox Hollow Golf Club in Trinity has been sold to Heritage Golf Group, a national operator that already owns nearby TPC Tampa Bay and The Club at Cheval. Financial terms of the October 27 acquisition were not disclosed.

The 32-year-old, par-71 course, designed by legendary architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., opened in 1994 under the Creighton family. It has earned recognition among Florida’s top public-access golf courses.

Heritage plans to begin improvements immediately, starting with overseeding ahead of Florida’s busy winter golf season. Additional renovations will be considered after evaluating the property and gathering member feedback.

The club features a 15,000-square-foot clubhouse, 25 practice hitting bays, and extensive putting and short-game facilities.

With this acquisition, Heritage now operates 51 golf and country clubs nationwide, including 14 in Florida. No changes have been announced to membership pricing, public tee times, or Fox Hollow’s semi-private status.
