Tampa Bay's Film Industry Generates $12.2 Million in Just Nine Months

Film and digital media productions supported by Film Tampa Bay generated more than $12.2 million in local spending during the first nine months of fiscal 2026, providing a significant boost to the region’s economy.
The productions accounted for 4,059 temporary local hires, 6,038 hotel room nights and 232 filming permits, benefiting area workers, hotels and businesses.
Tampa City Council will consider renewing its $100,000 annual contribution to Film Tampa Bay on November 5, continuing a partnership established in 2015.
The commission, part of Visit Tampa Bay, helps filmmakers secure locations, obtain permits and connect with local production crews. Recent projects have featured locations including the University of Tampa and neighborhood parks.
With Florida’s statewide film tax credit program discontinued in 2016, local incentives remain important for attracting productions. Hillsborough County offers eligible projects marketing grants of up to $150,000, helping Tampa compete for future filmmaking opportunities.
Nearly 92,000 Red-Light Violations Generate $12 Million Across Tampa

Tampa’s red-light cameras generated more than $12 million in revenue during the last fiscal year, but a new police report offers no independent evidence that the cameras have reduced crashes or injuries.
Of the total collected, $5.2 million went to Florida, $2.1 million to camera operator Verra Mobility, and $4.8 million stayed with Tampa. The city directed $3.6 million into its general fund and $1.2 million toward intersection safety improvements.
The cameras generated nearly 92,000 violation notices, with approximately 56,000 paid and another 27,000 resulting in traffic citations.
Only 483 violations were formally challenged. Of those receiving final decisions, approximately 23% were dismissed.
Although police cite crash prevention and pedestrian safety as priorities, the report provides no data demonstrating the program’s effectiveness.
Tampa plans to continue operating its red-light cameras through the current fiscal year, which ends June 30, 2027.

Gold Glove Winner Taylor Walls Gets $3.1 Million Reward From Rays

Fresh off winning his first Gold Glove Award, Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Taylor Walls has another reason to celebrate. The team exercised his $3.1 million club option for 2027, securing the defensive standout for another season.
Walls, 30, played 124 games in 2026, his healthiest season since 2022. Despite a career .200 batting average, his exceptional defense helped him produce 3.5 Wins Above Replacement for the American League champion Rays.
Tampa Bay also added hard-throwing reliever Alexander Alberto and outfielder Jack Suwinski to its 40-man roster, protecting both from Minor League free agency.
Other offseason decisions include exercising pitcher Drew Rasmussen’s $20 million option and confirming Yandy Díaz’s $13 million deal for 2027.
Following their World Series loss to Milwaukee, the Rays are reshaping their roster while retaining key contributors. The team currently has 39 players on its 40-man roster.
Lightning Bombshell: Nikita Kucherov Reportedly Wants Out of Tampa Bay

The Tampa Bay Lightning could be facing a franchise-altering departure as superstar Nikita Kucherov reportedly wants to be traded and does not intend to re-sign with the team.
According to the report, citing Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Kucherov has informed teammates and management of his intentions, although no trade has been announced.
The surprising development comes just after Kucherov surpassed Steven Stamkos as the Lightning’s all-time leading scorer, cementing his place in franchise history.
The two-time NHL MVP is reportedly in the final season of his eight-year, $76 million contract. His remarkable career includes two Stanley Cup championships and three Art Ross Trophies.
For Tampa Bay fans, losing one of hockey’s most accomplished offensive players would mark a dramatic turning point. General manager Julien BriseBois now faces potentially difficult decisions as the organization considers its future.
The reasons behind Kucherov’s reported decision remain unclear.
