Runway Rendezvous: Carolina Herrera Graces Tampa’s Art Scene

The Tampa Museum of Art, in collaboration with Saks Fifth Avenue, is set to host its 13th annual CITY: Fashion+Art+Culture event on April 20.

This year's highlight is a runway show featuring the latest collection from renowned designer Carolina Herrera.

The event, supported by the Vinik Family Foundation as the presenting sponsor, along with fashion sponsors such as Mary and Bryan Crino, the Straz Family Foundation, and Vera and Cortland Reilly, aims to blend the worlds of fashion and art.

Funds raised from this event are crucial, as they directly support the Tampa Museum of Art’s educational programs and exhibitions. These initiatives provide vital learning opportunities for individuals of all ages in the community.

Tickets for this exclusive event are priced at $500 and are available for purchase on the museum's website, tampamuseum.org.

Thermal Oasis: Over a Thousand Manatees Flock to Tampa Electric's Warm Waters

In a record-breaking event, Tampa Electric's Manatee Viewing Center in Apollo Beach, Florida, witnessed an extraordinary gathering of 1,100 manatees on December 29, surpassing the previous record of 850. This significant increase in the number of manatees is attributed to the consistent chilly temperatures this season, as stated by Stan Kroh, the manager of Land and Stewardship Programs for Tampa Electric.

The center, a popular attraction for both locals and tourists, becomes a sanctuary for these marine mammals when Tampa Bay's water temperature falls below 68 degrees. The manatees seek refuge in the warm water discharge canal of Tampa Electric's Big Bend Power Station, a practice that dates back to the early 1970s.

This event not only highlights the center's role in wildlife conservation but also underscores Tampa Electric's commitment to environmental stewardship.

Hero Hound: Police Dog Mary Lu Rescues Missing Florida Girl

In a remarkable display of canine intuition and skill, Mary Lu, a K-9 officer from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO), played a pivotal role in locating a missing 11-year-old girl in Florida. The young girl, reported as missing and endangered, was found locked in a park bathroom, safe and unharmed.

The search operation, led by Deputy Sarah Ernstes and K-9 Mary Lu, began on Friday evening around 8 p.m. The investigative trail led them first to a neighbor's home, where it was discovered the girl had been given a ride to a nearby apartment complex in Wimauma. Once there, Mary Lu's acute senses directed the deputies to a locked bathroom in a local park, where the girl was hiding.

After deputies convinced the girl to unlock the door, she was safely reunited with her family. Sheriff Chad Chronister praised the HCSO K-9 Unit's commitment and skill in this successful mission. The Sheriff's Office has shared a video capturing the heartwarming moment when Mary Lu located the girl and the officers were able to bring her out of the bathroom.

The Vicious Cycle: Unveiling the Harsh Truth of Yo-Yo Dieting

A recent qualitative study led by Lynsey Romo of North Carolina State University reveals the harsh realities of "yo-yo dieting" or weight cycling. The study, which involved 36 adults, delved into the personal experiences of those who repeatedly lost and regained significant weight. Findings indicated that most participants didn't start dieting for health reasons but due to societal pressures and comparisons to celebrities or peers.

Participants reported a range of weight-loss methods, often leading to temporary success followed by weight regain. This cycle resulted in feelings of shame and worsened self-perception. Many adopted unhealthy and extreme weight management behaviors, like binge eating, calorie restriction, and overexercising, which became unsustainable, leading to further weight gain.

The study highlights how weight cycling often turned into an obsession, impacting participants' social lives and well-being. Only a few managed to break the cycle, shifting focus to health rather than weight, and adopting more balanced eating habits. However, most remained trapped in the cycle, influenced by ingrained thought patterns and societal norms.

Romo's study, recently published in Qualitative Health Research, underscores the detrimental effects of dieting driven by societal standards, advocating against it unless medically necessary. The study reveals the long-term consequences of weight cycling, including body dissatisfaction, stress, and an unhealthy preoccupation with weight.

Rhythms and Tech Collide: USF's 'SLICK, MUSIC, AND MOVEMENT' Evening
