Detoured Dollars: Hillsborough's Transit Tax Trails Off Course

Jeopardy website turns “matchmaker”
In a surprising twist for Hillsborough County, less than half of the previously collected transportation sales tax will actually be allocated to transportation projects.
Initially approved by voters in 2018, the 1% sales tax aimed to enhance the county's infrastructure but was later invalidated by the Florida Supreme Court. The current state budget proposal reveals that only about $256 million of the accumulated $589 million will fund road projects.
The remainder is earmarked for legal fees, tax refunds, and a sales tax holiday, diverging from the original intent to bolster transportation and transit services amidst the county's growing traffic woes and minimal public transit options.
Urgent Appeal: Tampa Nonprofit Seeks New Home to Sustain Community Lifeline

In Tampa, Florida, New Life Warehouse, a cornerstone nonprofit organization dedicated to providing essential home goods to individuals and families in need, is on the brink of closing its doors.
With less than a month left before it must vacate its current location, the future looks uncertain for both the charity and those it serves. The warehouse, offered to the organization at no cost, has been sold, leaving New Life without a home and scrambling to find a new space that fits its unique needs.
Director Stephanie Haile highlights the critical role New Life Warehouse plays in the community, emphasizing the looming gap in support for many families should the nonprofit cease operations. Efforts to find a new location have been challenging, with available spaces either unsuitable or inadequate for the nonprofit's requirements for space and growth potential. This predicament not only threatens New Life's mission but also concerns partner agencies, such as Church World Service, which relies heavily on New Life Warehouse for furniture and housing support in their resettlement efforts.
As the search for a new home continues, New Life Warehouse hopes for a temporary closure at most. The organization urgently seeks a space with at least 10,000 square feet, loading docks, and ample parking to resume its vital services. In addition, a fundraiser is planned for May to help support the move, details of which will be shared on social media.
