Smokin' Success: Tampa's Big John's Alabama BBQ Sizzles to the Top in Florida

The vision of a perfect open pit bbq restaurant

Big John's Alabama BBQ in Tampa has been crowned the best barbecue in Florida by Southern Living magazine.

This venerable 56-year-old eatery, celebrated for its open pit-style barbecuing, shines with its traditional Southern fare, including mouth-watering chicken, sausage, and ribs, alongside beloved sides like mac and cheese and collard greens.

Esteemed for its authenticity and rich history dating back to 1968, Big John's stands out in the magazine's annual roundup, which favors long-standing, classic barbecue joints.

This recognition marks another feather in the cap for the family-operated restaurant, continuing a legacy of culinary excellence that began with the late Rev. John A. Stephens.

A Glimpse of the Past: Historic Tampa Estate of Fredrick Mayes For Sale

Architecture reminiscent of the 1920’s

The historic Mediterranean Revival residence on Davis Islands, originally constructed for the acclaimed Tampa Bay developer Frederick Mayes during the 1920s land boom, is now available for purchase.

Situated at 200 Corsica St., this home stands as a testament to Mayes' architectural prowess, known for his Spanish-style estates. The property, a part of the National Register of Historical Places since 1989, echoes the rich history of its former notable owner, advertising icon Louis Benito.

5,998 square feet on a 14,700-square-foot lot, the residence features five bedrooms, four bathrooms, and unique elements like a large "B" inscribed above the living room fireplace, honoring Benito.

Listed at $3.2 million, this piece of Tampa's architectural heritage is marketed "as is," promising a blend of historical grandeur and exclusive living.

Thrills and Spills: USF's NCAA Hopes Fade, but NIT Awaits at Home

In a riveting AAC semifinal showdown, the University of South Florida's basketball team narrowly missed triumph, succumbing to UAB with a score of 93-83.

Despite a strong start and a spirited fight, USF's NCAA tournament aspirations took a hit, though they're set to host an NIT game at the Y Center.

Selton Miguel shone brightly with 19 points, marking his notable 27th double-figure game of the season. Yet, even with Kasean Pryor's impressive double-double and the team's relentless effort,

UAB's consistent performance, led by Efrem Johnson's 21 points, sealed the win. The Bulls now look ahead to the NIT, aiming to capitalize on their home-court advantage and continue their competitive season.

Deadly Outcome: Pasco County Deputy Involved in Fatal Shooting Amid

Traffic Stop Chaos

In Hudson, Florida, a tragic incident unfolded at the intersection of U.S. 19 and New York Avenue when a Pasco County deputy fatally shot 40-year-old Paul Smith.

The deputy, believing Smith to be a suspect in a battery by strangulation case, approached him at a 7-Eleven. Smith, however, attempted to flee in his car with the deputy clinging to the vehicle. Despite multiple commands to stop and the use of a taser, Smith continued, leading the deputy to shoot him. Smith was provided aid but succumbed to his injuries.

The confrontation, which lasted approximately 90 seconds, is now under thorough investigation, though authorities have assured there is no public threat. The incident prompted a temporary closure of U.S. 19 for investigation purposes.
