Keep your finger on the Pulse!

GOOD MORNING!

At the bottom of every issue is a poll asking for your thoughts on how we did in the current issue.

A few issues ago had a story about the new Blue Bell Flavor “Gooey Butter”. Even lacking demographic data on the breakdown of this newsletter’s audience, I knew I was taking a bit of a chance on that article not connecting with you as much as it did ME as a native St. Louisan who grew up on Gooey Butter coffee cakes and can make one “to die for” if you ever had a chance to taste it.

Yes, the article was purely out of my own personal joy for this newest way to consume Gooey Butter flavor, and I will take the punishment of a negative review as a result. I will own up to my mistake in judgement, but if faced with the same choice of articles, I will admit I’d have a hard time not doing it again!

Thank you, “cg….” for your comment as well as all the other great feedback we’ve received from all of you.

Have a great day,

Dr Ted

Navigating the Digital Age: Florida’s Bold Move to Shield Minors

In a landmark move for child online safety, Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida has signed HB 3 into law, establishing new guidelines for social media use among minors.

This legislation restricts users under 14 from creating social media accounts and allows those aged 14 to 15 to do so with parental consent.

The bill, lauded for protecting young individuals from the potential dangers of social media, represents a balanced approach to internet safety, encouraging parental involvement in digital activities. Additionally, HB 3 mandates age verification on websites with pornographic content to further shield minors.

This law positions Florida as a pioneer in child online protection, emphasizing a safer digital environment without compromising Floridian anonymity online.

From Pennsylvania to Under the Sea: 96-Year-Old's Record-Breaking Adventure

Hmm, something’s missing here!

Fred Johnson, a vibrant 96-year-old from Erie, Pennsylvania, recently made waves by becoming the oldest person to participate in a SeaTREK at The Florida Aquarium in Tampa. Alongside his daughter Patty Sorensen, Fred embarked on this underwater walking adventure, offering him a unique perspective of marine life, far removed from the usual aquarium experience. The SeaTREK, a tour designed specifically for those without diving experience, allows participants to stroll among coral caves and marine creatures like fish, spotted eagle rays, bonnethead sharks, and loggerhead sea turtles.

This activity, open to individuals aged 10 and above, does not require swimming skills. Fred's enthusiasm for the experience was evident. "It was exciting!" he exclaimed, thrilled to be amidst the fish rather than observing them from a distance.

Patty admitted she wouldn't have tried it without her father's initiative but found the adventure "well worth the effort."

Led by trained divers, SeaTREK tours are available on weekends and select weekdays, offering a memorable experience for adventurers of all ages.

Wrong-Way DUI Crash in Tampa Leads to Elderly Driver's Arrest

In Tampa, a 73-year-old man, Linton Robertson, was arrested following a wrong-way crash on Sunday night, leaving both involved drivers hospitalized. The incident occurred near Columbus Drive and Regional Water Lane.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), Robertson, who was under the influence, collided head-on with another vehicle. Both he and the other driver were taken to Tampa General Hospital with injuries.

Robertson, who has a history of DUI charges, showed signs of impairment at the hospital. Charges for this DUI incident are pending the analysis of his blood sample by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Sheriff Chad Chronister emphasized that driving under the influence is inexcusable and poses serious risks to public safety.

Additionally, over the same weekend, HCSO made 31 DUI arrests, highlighting a strict enforcement against impaired driving.

Hive Talkin': How Tampa Bee Honey is Making Beekeeping Accessible

In a recent episode of the Sustainable Living Show, aired on March 25, 2024, Stephanie Ramthun from Tampa Bee Honey illuminated the fascinating world of urban beekeeping. With a foundation in biology and extensive hands-on experience, Stephanie, alongside her husband Christian, a retired military veteran of 22 years, ventured into the apiary industry in October 2014. Their mission with Tampa Bee Honey is to simplify beekeeping for homeowners, offering the joys and benefits of having bees—such as pollination and honey production—without the hassle of maintenance.

The discussion spanned a variety of crucial topics for aspiring beekeepers, including navigating urban beekeeping laws, weekly hive maintenance routines, identifying bee swarms, and distinguishing bees from other insects. Moreover, Stephanie shared insights on learning beekeeping skills and the company’s bee removal services.

For more details on Stephanie’s journey and Tampa Bee Honey's services, enthusiasts can visit their website, reach out via email, or call directly. The episode, rich with information for both seasoned and novice beekeepers, is part of the Sustainable Living Show’s efforts to promote eco-friendly practices.

Tooth Loss Linked to Brain Atrophy and Cognitive Decline, Study Finds

A study in npj Aging highlights the link between tooth loss, dietary changes, and cognitive health in the elderly.

Analyzing 919 elderly Japanese participants, researchers found significant brain volume reductions, especially in the hippocampus, among those with fewer teeth. This atrophy correlates with shifts towards less plant-based and more fatty, processed diets, potentially accelerating cognitive decline through inflammation and other mechanisms.

The study suggests that natural teeth play a crucial role in brain health, partly because periodontal ligaments, connected to the brain via the trigeminal nerve, can't be fully replaced by dentures. These findings underscore the importance of oral health and balanced diets in maintaining cognitive function, indicating the need for further research to explore these connections.
