Jannus Live Turns Back Time: An All-Star Tribute to Grateful Dead
& Allman Brothers!

Live Dead & Brothers tonight!
Rock enthusiasts in St. Petersburg are in for a treat this weekend as Jannus Live hosts an unprecedented musical homage to two of the genre's legendary bands: the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers Band. The event, aptly named "Live Dead & Brothers: An All-Star Celebration," features an impressive lineup of musicians closely tied to the original bands, including Tom Constanten, a keyboardist who played on two of the Dead's albums, and Les Dudek, a guitarist on the Allman Brothers' "Brothers and Sisters." This concert marks a rare gathering of artists who have directly collaborated with iconic figures Gregg Allman and Jerry Garcia, making it a must-see for fans of the jam band scene.
Constanten, who celebrated his 80th birthday last month, and Dudek's participation suggest that attendees might enjoy classic hits like "Jessica" among other favorites. Special guest and Florida's own Bobby Lee Rodgers will also grace the stage, adding his unique flair to the night's performances.
Set to take place on Friday, April 5, 2024, at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg, Florida, tickets for this extraordinary celebration start at $27.50. This event not only promises a night of nostalgic jams and legendary tunes but also a historic gathering of musicians linked to rock royalty.

Set Sail in Style: Margaritaville’s 'Islander' to Make Waves from Tampa This June

Margaritaville at Sea is expanding its horizon with a splash, introducing the "Islander" to its fleet, a new cruise ship setting sail from Port Tampa Bay this June. Promising a unique blend of leisure and luxury, the Islander will boast over 1,100 staterooms, each outfitted with brand-new furnishings, Margaritaville's signature comfortable bedding, and a host of premium amenities designed to ensure guests sail in utmost comfort. Each balcony promises spaciousness, coupled with large walk-in showers and luxurious fixtures, embodying a floating paradise.
Drawing inspiration from Jimmy Buffett’s legendary music, the ship will feature six “ultra-luxury” suites, each themed after iconic songs like “Come Monday” and “Everlasting Moon,” promising an immersive Margaritaville experience at sea. The Islander’s maiden voyage is scheduled for a four-night journey starting June 14, including a picturesque stop in Cozumel, Mexico. According to Brad Schwaeble, Margaritaville's COO, this expansion aims to transport travelers to the Margaritaville state of mind, integrating the brand’s famous hospitality from their hotels, resorts, and restaurants into the cruising experience.

A Grand Evening: New Steinway Unveiled at New Tampa Performing Arts

The New Tampa Performing Arts Center is elevating its musical offerings by inaugurating its newly acquired Steinway Model D grand piano this Friday, April 5, from 7 to 9 p.m.
This marks a significant enhancement in the center's ability to host a broader array of performances. The event promises an exceptional evening as the piano is played for the first time by a distinguished lineup of Tampa-based college music professors. The roster includes luminaries such as Simon Lasky from the University of South Florida, Pablo Arencibia from the University of Tampa, and the renowned Palestinian-Jordanian pianist Ghadeer Abaido, known for her performances in chamber orchestras throughout the Middle East and the U.S. Admission to this musical feast is free, with RSVP required to secure a spot.

A Step Forward: Gov. DeSantis Signs Bill for Specialized Dementia Training
for Officers

Florida has taken a significant step forward in dementia care with Governor Ron DeSantis signing a bill to introduce specialized dementia training for law enforcement officers. This initiative aims to equip officers with the skills needed to effectively communicate with individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related conditions. The training will include online courses on recognizing behavioral symptoms, employing non-physical intervention strategies, and identifying signs of elder abuse.
With the training set to commence in October, it's anticipated that this will not only benefit the aging population of Florida but also provide relief to caregivers who often face challenges managing their loved ones' conditions. Florida A&M student Kaylin Jean-Louis highlighted the importance of such training by sharing personal experiences with her grandmother's Alzheimer's condition, underscoring how crucial understanding and patience are in these situations.
The Alzheimer’s Association of Florida has been a strong advocate for this bill, noting that individuals with dementia are particularly prone to situations that may escalate without proper handling by law enforcement. With over half a million Floridians over 65 living with Alzheimer’s, and numbers expected to increase, this law marks a proactive approach to supporting a vulnerable segment of the community, ensuring their safety and dignity in public interactions.

Kaya: Orlando’s Culinary Jewel Sparkles on the National Stage

In a striking nod to Florida’s burgeoning food scene, Kaya, a vibrant Filipino eatery in Orlando, has been spotlighted by the James Beard Foundation as a finalist for this year’s most “outstanding” new restaurant in the country. This nomination places Kaya in the ranks of culinary excellence, vying for one of the highest recognitions in the food industry at the 33rd James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards.
Nestled in the heart of Orlando’s Mills50 district, Kaya has quickly made a name for itself with its innovative seafood and vegetable-centric menu. The restaurant, which often requires reservations for its sought-after tasting menu, also warmly welcomes walk-ins with an enticing a la carte option.
Beyond its regular offerings, Kaya enriches the local food scene with weekly special events on its patio, including guest chef pop-ups that showcase culinary diversity every Tuesday.
The anticipation is high as the culinary community and food enthusiasts alike await the announcement of the winners at the prestigious James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards ceremony, set to take place on June 10 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
