Pasco County Hits the Polls: Key City Leadership Positions on the Line

Pasco County voters are set to determine their city leadership this Tuesday. Highlight races include the contentious Dade City Group 4 commission seat where ex-mayor Steven Van Gorden competes against Kristin Church, having significantly out-fundraised her amidst a controversial past.

Meanwhile, incumbent Jim Shive faces Lucinda Uribe for the Group 3 seat. Zephyrhills sees incumbents Jodi Wilkeson and Charles Proctor challenged for their city council seats.

New Port Richey and Port Richey are also hosting critical races with multiple candidates, including incumbents seeking re-election.

In San Antonio, three commission seats are contested, and Saint Leo's only competitive race features incumbent William Hamilton against Tory England.

The elections, crucial for shaping local governance, are nonpartisan with polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Wild Florida Awaits: Discover Safari Wilderness Ranch in Lakeland

Located next to Florida's expansive Green Swamp, Safari Wilderness Ranch offers a distinctive alternative to traditional zoos. This 260-acre ranch in Lakeland, Florida, features approximately 800 animals that roam freely in conditions akin to their natural habitats, reflecting the wilderness of Africa rather than a typical zoo setting.

Lex Salisbury, the CEO and resident owner, emphasizes the ranch's commitment to experiential learning. Unlike conventional educational approaches, Safari Wilderness allows visitors to engage directly with the environment through a variety of interactive experiences, including ATV and camel-back safaris, vehicle tours, drive-thru adventures, and kayak tours.

"This is much more real than a zoo. It’s about touching, smelling, and interacting with the animals," says Salisbury, who has a background in zoo management. These hands-on experiences are designed to create lasting memories and foster a connection with nature, supporting conservation efforts.

For those looking to explore the wild side of Florida and enjoy a unique adventure, Safari Wilderness Ranch offers an unforgettable experience that goes beyond simply viewing animals.

Turning Back Time: Exercise Proven to Reverse Age-Related Lipid Accumulation

see article for more realistic view of glove

Researchers at Amsterdam University Medical Center have made a significant breakthrough in understanding the aging process, specifically how lipid accumulation associated with aging can potentially be reversed through regular exercise. The study, which involved both animal and human subjects and published in Nature Aging, highlights the accumulation of a particular type of lipid known as bis(monoacylglycero)phosphates (BMPs) in aging tissues.

The study analyzed tissues from mice and muscle biopsies from older adults, noting elevated levels of BMPs in both. However, after introducing an exercise regimen of one hour daily, a noticeable decrease in BMP levels was observed in the participants. This suggests that physical activity could play a crucial role in managing age-related changes in our bodies.

Riekelt Houtkooper and Georges Janssens of Amsterdam UMC emphasize that while this discovery is promising, it is just the beginning of exploring how targeted interventions could address age-related deterioration. They plan further studies to delve deeper into the effects of BMPs on aging and whether these effects are exclusively linked to exercise or can be influenced by other methods as well.
