New Tampa Performing Arts Center Hosts Simon Lasky’s Album Release Concert

jazz concert in a small performance hall

Celebrated jazz composer Simon Lasky will celebrate the release of his album "For the Dreamers" with a special performance in New Tampa. The event will feature a talented ensemble of local jazz all-stars. This marks Lasky's first release in six years, generating significant anticipation for his latest work.

The album was co-produced by Tampa's own Alejandro Arenas and is being distributed by the U.K.-based Ubuntu Music. "For the Dreamers" serves as a tribute to both Lasky's British roots and his new home in Tampa Bay, featuring evocative tracks like "Half a World Away" and "Tampa Strut."

Since moving to the U.S. in 2018 to pursue a Masters in Jazz Studies at the University of South Florida, Lasky has become a pivotal figure in the local jazz community. His latest performance featured a lineup of eight musicians, including Arenas, Catalan vocalist-songwriter Ona K, guitarist Peter Mongaya, and others.

The Simon Lasky Group will perform at the New Tampa Performing Arts Center, and tickets for the upcoming show on Monday, April 22, are still available, starting at $15.

Tampa's Bobby Finke Targets New Records Ahead of Paris 2024 Olympics

(riding the end of a water spout?)

With the 2024 summer Olympics on the horizon in Paris, Team USA athletes are in full preparation mode. Tampa's own Bobby Finke is among those gearing up for the upcoming challenges. With just 100 days until the games and two months left before the qualifiers, Finke is intensively training to maintain or surpass his own American records in the 800-meter and 1500-meter freestyle events.

Finke shared his mixed feelings about the approaching competition, highlighting his calm demeanor supported by a strong backing from his team and loved ones. He also commented on fellow Floridian and Olympic champion Katie Ledecky, noting her continued dominance in the sport with good-natured humor.

The Olympics are set to begin on July 26 and will continue until August 11, promising a thrilling showcase of talent and determination.

Make P.F. Chang's Famous Mongolian Beef at Home in Under 30 Minutes

Experience the best Mongolian Beef with this delectable recipe that rivals the popular version served at P.F. Changs. This quick and easy dish features tender slices of beef enveloped in a rich, slightly sweet and savory sauce. Ideal for a family-friendly weeknight dinner, it's not only delicious but also simple to prepare in less than 30 minutes.

What sets our Mongolian Beef apart is its authentic taste, reminiscent of the beloved Chinese takeout classic but healthier and more satisfying when made at home. Accompany it with steamed rice and a side of greens for a perfectly rounded meal. The dish is so popular that it's recommended to prepare a double batch for savoring leftovers the next day.

Originating from Taiwan in the 1950s during the rise of Chinese BBQ, Mongolian Beef is traditionally prepared in a wok. It's characterized by its quick cooking method over high heat, using tenderized beef simmered in a flavorful sauce. Despite its name, the dish is not a traditional Mongolian recipe but an innovation from Taiwanese cuisine, named for its barbecue-style technique.

Understanding Mercury Risks: Safe Fish Eating Practices for Expectant Mothers

Pregnant women, along with those considering pregnancy and breastfeeding mothers, are advised to consume fish as a source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids, while carefully managing mercury intake. This guidance is based on recommendations from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), supported by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).

Guidelines for Safe Fish Consumption:

  1. Optimal Intake: Consume 2-3 servings per week (totaling 8 to 12 ounces) of various fish types to maximize health benefits while minimizing mercury exposure.

  2. Moderate Intake: Limit intake of higher mercury fish, like albacore tuna, to no more than one serving per week (up to 6 ounces).

  3. High Mercury Fish: Completely avoid fish with the highest mercury concentrations.

  4. Locally Caught Fish: If consuming fish caught by family or friends, and without specific advisories, limit such consumption to one serving per week and avoid other fish that week.

Adhering to these guidelines can help ensure the health benefits of eating fish while preventing the potential risks associated with mercury, which can include severe nervous system and brain damage, as well as learning disabilities and hearing loss in babies exposed in the womb.

For any concerns or further information on the effects of environmental toxins, consulting with an obstetric provider or your regional Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU) is recommended.
