Tampa Bay Anglers Reel in Success: Snook and Redfish Thrive in Mangroves

If only it were this easy
In Tampa Bay, fishing enthusiasts have been successful in their recent outings, especially in the mangroves, where they are catching notable numbers of snook and redfish. Captain Chuck Rogers, a local guide, has observed the bay's water temperature nearing 80 degrees Fahrenheit, making it ideal for fishing. Among his findings, the Spanish mackerel are notably active in the center of the bay, particularly around the Gandy Bridge. Additionally, trout are thriving on the grass flats south of Picnic Island.
Captain George Hastick has been guiding his clients to smaller male snook in areas inundated with mangroves along the Pinellas side of the bay. He also noted that redfish are often found in these areas, taking live sardines or cut pinfish as bait. Furthermore, anglers have been hooking tarpon weighing up to 100 pounds near the Skyway Bridge.
Local bait shops report an abundance of scaled sardines around the bay bridges and shallow grass flats. Gandy Bait & Tackle's Zack has seen an uptick in mangrove snapper catches and tarpon sightings, while Riviera Bait & Tackle's Billy reports numerous tarpon and small bull sharks around Riviera Bay. Angler 360's Keith has his customers targeting sheepshead and black drum along the Courtney Campbell Causeway with success.

How to Protect Your Pets During the Rare Cicada Emergence

Florida not in cicada emergence area
(NOTE: This information will be helpful if you plan to travel to the Midwest this Spring/Summer)
This spring, a significant cicada emergence involves two broods appearing simultaneously across states like Iowa, Mississippi, and Tennessee.
These insects, though not harmful to pets if consumed in moderation, can cause gastrointestinal issues if eaten in excess.
Sandra Faeh from the American Veterinary Medical Association suggests this as an opportunity for pet owners to reinforce training commands to prevent pets from overindulging. She notes that while the cicadas themselves are safe, their discarded shells could be a choking hazard.
The noise from the cicadas is loud, akin to a motorcycle, but pets generally tolerate this continuous sound better than abrupt noises like fireworks. Pet owners should monitor their animals for any signs of distress and consult their vet if necessary.
The next simultaneous emergence of these broods wonât occur until 2245.

Tampa Convention Center to Host Grand Cheerleading Event, Attracting Over 26,000 Attendees

(Perhaps not to this scale)
Varsity Spirit is set to ignite excitement at the Tampa Convention Center for the second consecutive year with a trio of spectacular cheerleading events slated for April 25-28. The Youth Summit, The Recreation Summit, and The Celebration will collectively draw an estimated crowd exceeding 26,000 participants and spectators from 41 states and five countries.
The bustling activity is expected to significantly boost local commerce, with a projected economic impact surpassing $15 million. Varsity has booked nearly 15,000 hotel room nights, indicating a notable increase from last year's figures. The extensive event schedule will see competitions running from early morning until late evening, encompassing over 600 cheerleading teams and more than 1,500 coaches.
Visitors should prepare for heightened traffic around the convention center, especially due to a construction closure at Franklin Street and Channelside Drive. Ample parking is available at nearby facilities, and additional transportation options include the free TECO Line Streetcar. Attendees can look forward to a variety of food and beverage choices both inside and outside the venue, enhancing the event experience.
