Keep your finger on the Pulse!

GOOD MORNING!

Little by little you’ll be seeing changes coming to improve our newsletter.

We’re adding a story about pickle ball in Of Interest because it seems to just be exploding in this area. There was a big display of clothing for pickle ball players just as you walked into Target today. WC recently sponsored a large pickle ball tournament. I guess its time to learn a little more about it.

We’ve just become an Amazon Associate to help fund this little project, and to provide convenient access to niche, seasonal items as well. (We may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you.) Thank you for supporting us.

Celestial Colors: Northern Lights Expected Again in Florida Tonight

Northern Lights as seen much farther north

NOTE: This story was written for last night - don’t know if “tonight” it will occur again or not. BUT, its worth checking out the source of our summary for the amazing images they have. For those who don’t know, this is an event not seen for 20 years.

Floridians are treated to another rare sighting of the Northern Lights tonight, with the best visibility expected between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. in areas away from city lights. This unusual phenomenon, more common in higher latitudes, follows a significant solar storm, enabling the auroras to be visible as far south as Alabama, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Clear skies forecasted for the Tampa Bay area tonight improve the chances of witnessing the Aurora Borealis. While challenging to see with the naked eye, modern smartphones may capture these elusive lights, enhancing the viewing experience. Following last night's display, NOAA encourages viewers to share their sightings and photos with local media. The celestial event promises another spectacular night sky over Florida

Why Pickleball Is Winning Over

Active Middle-Aged & Senior Athletes

Pickleball, a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, is rapidly becoming a favorite among middle-aged and older adults. Despite its seemingly gentle pace, which might appear uninspiring at first glance, pickleball offers a compelling mix of strategy, social interaction, and physical activity, making it an ideal sport for those looking to stay active in a fun, low-impact way.

For many who were athletic in their younger years, pickleball provides a perfect balance. The slower speed of the ball, akin to a "dead" ping pong ball, actually allows for strategic gameplay that can be as mentally stimulating as it is physical. The sport demands less of the body compared to more strenuous activities like tennis, making it accessible to players with varying levels of physical ability.

The true charm of pickleball lies in its community spirit. It's not just a game but an opportunity for social engagement. Players often find the atmosphere both welcoming and invigorating, fostering friendships alongside healthy competition. This combination of light physical exertion and rich social interaction is exactly why so many pick up a paddle for the first time—and why they keep coming back.

Whether you’re looking to reignite your competitive spirit or simply want to enjoy a good game, pickleball might just be the sport you’re looking for. Join the growing number of enthusiasts who are discovering that this sport can be as rewarding as it is entertaining.

Rays Reclaim .500 with Arozarena's Four RBI Night Against Yankees

In a commanding display at Tropicana Field, Randy Arozarena and Yandy Díaz powered the Tampa Bay Rays to a 7-2 triumph over the New York Yankees.

Arozarena sparked the offense with a pivotal three-run homer in the third inning off Yankees' Nestor Cortes, contributing to his total of four RBIs. Despite a slow start this season, his batting average climbed to .154 after a multi-hit game.

Díaz set the tone early, smashing Cortes' first pitch for a home run, and later adding an RBI double in a three-run seventh inning, pushing his recent hit streak to .394.

Zack Littell held the Yankees to two runs over nearly six innings, aiding the Rays' climb back to a .500 record. Closing pitcher Pete Fairbanks, returning from a hand injury, sealed the game with a clean ninth inning.

The Yankees showed brief resistance with Anthony Volpe’s early two-run single, but struggled to sustain momentum, especially after a near home run by Juan Soto was caught at the wall.

Liquid Gold: Olive Oil Linked to Lower Dementia Death Risk, Harvard

Study Finds

A new study from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health has revealed that incorporating olive oil into your diet could significantly decrease the risk of dementia-related deaths.

Analyzing data from over 92,000 adults over a 28-year period, researchers found that those who consumed more than 7 grams of olive oil daily had a 28% reduced risk of dementia-related mortality compared to those who seldom used it. This benefit persisted regardless of other dietary habits.

The study suggests that substituting olive oil for fats like margarine and mayonnaise might enhance longevity free from dementia, attributing the health benefits of olive oil to its antioxidant properties, which combat oxidative stress and cellular damage.

However, experts caution that the study only indicates a correlation, not causation, and emphasize the importance of a comprehensive healthy lifestyle. The Alzheimer’s Association highlights the need for more controlled trials to establish definitive benefits.
