Enticing Hacks to Survive Florida Summers

Florida summers are famously intense, but these clever hacks from Tampa Bay locals will help you thrive through the heat, humidity, and bugs. Here are a few tips to pique your interest:

  • Stay Cool at the Beach: Pre-apply sunscreen at home, use baby powder to remove sand, and keep aloe gel in the fridge for soothing sunburn relief.

  • Beat the Bugs: Welcome lizards to handle indoor pests naturally, and use DEET-based repellents or Avon’s Skin-So-Soft to fend off mosquitoes and no-see-ums.

  • Navigate Crowds: Visit beaches late in the afternoon for easier parking and fewer crowds, and order online from popular spots like Mazzaro’s Italian Market to avoid the hassle.

Cool Tips to Beat the Heat: Thermostat Settings for Summer Savings

Set at 78 - 82 degrees

Beat the Heat: Efficient Thermostat Settings to Save on Cooling Costs

With temperatures soaring into the 90s and feeling over 100 degrees in Florida, managing indoor cooling becomes crucial. Florida Power & Light (FPL) and TECO Energy offer guidance to help residents stay cool without breaking the bank.

Recommended Thermostat Settings

  • When at Home: Set your thermostat to 78 degrees.

  • When Away: Set it to 82 degrees.

These settings balance comfort and cost, preventing your air conditioning unit from overworking and spiking your electricity bill. Cooling accounts for over 60% of a typical monthly bill, making these efficient settings essential during sweltering weather.

Energy-Saving Tips

  1. Close the Shades: Keep sunlight out to reduce indoor heat.

  2. Avoid the Oven: Use alternative cooking methods to keep your kitchen cool.

  3. Maintain Your A/C: Regularly clean or replace filters to ensure optimal performance.

  4. Upgrade Your System: Consider a high-efficiency air conditioner for better cooling and savings.

Florida's High Ovarian Cancer Rates: A Silent Killer Among Women

Florida has one of the highest rates of ovarian cancer in the nation, and this disease is the deadliest cancer affecting women. Stephanie, who lost her mother to ovarian cancer in 2011, shares her family's battle with this illness. Dr. Joel Cardenas from Cleveland Clinic Weston explains that ovarian cancer originates in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or peritoneum in the abdomen and pelvis.

Stephanie's grandmother also died young from cancer, a tragic legacy that Stephanie herself faced when she started experiencing symptoms like heavy bleeding and low energy. Her doctor performed a robotic hysterectomy, removing her ovaries and uterus. "She did very well with our surgical approach and is now back to enjoying life," Dr. Cardenas said.

Women with a family history of ovarian cancer are advised to start screenings at age 30 or earlier if their relative was diagnosed young. Stephanie advocates for genetic testing to inform women of their health risks, emphasizing the importance of being proactive. "The more informed you are, the better decisions you can make for your health," she says, encouraging transparency and action.
