Tampa’s Uptown Music Festival Moves Downtown with Alex Harris

Wow, this is an impressive story

Tampa's University Area CDC (UACDC) has transformed "Suitcase City" since 1998, addressing issues like poverty and crime. The nonprofit introduced services like bus routes, a community center, and educational programs for all ages, later expanding to include schools, clinics, and community gardens.

In 2019, UACDC launched the Uptown Music Festival to celebrate Tampa Bay's diverse culture and raise funds for the community. After a pandemic pause, the festival is relocating downtown to Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, thanks to recognition from Visit Tampa Bay.

Alex Harris, who recently released his debut album Back To Us, will headline the festival. Harris, the son of a Pentecostal preacher, brings a soulful sound reminiscent of Al Green and Solomon Burke. He founded the Arts Conservatory for Teens (ACT) in 2012, empowering at-risk youth through arts education.

The Uptown Music & Arts Festival takes place May 25-26, featuring Harris and other talented performers. Tickets start at $90.

New Safety Standards for Beach Umbrellas: Stay Safe This Memorial Day

We’ve seen an afternoon storm carry off an umbrella

As Memorial Day Weekend approaches, many are gearing up for beach outings in Clearwater, Fla. However, if you're planning to bring a beach umbrella, it's crucial to be aware of new safety standards.

Over the years, thousands of people have been injured, and some have even been impaled, by beach umbrellas caught in strong winds. Following multiple incidents, including two fatalities—the latest in 2022 on a South Carolina beach—officials have updated the safety standards for beach umbrellas.

Earlier this year, ASTM International introduced new specifications to reduce umbrella-related injuries. These standards, developed in response to hazards identified by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), require manufacturers to use varied testing methods based on umbrella size to ensure sturdiness.

Additionally, umbrellas now come with clearer warning labels and detailed instructions for assembly and installation. Compliance labels are also mandated for anchor devices to assure users of their reliability.

Proper anchoring is essential to prevent accidents. Ensuring your beach umbrella is secure will help you enjoy a safe and relaxing holiday weekend.

Women and Cognitive Impairment Linked to Higher Rates of Driving Cessation

A recent study in Neurology explores why older adults stop driving, focusing on early Alzheimer's signs. Led by Dr. Ganesh M. Babulal from Washington University, the study involved 283 participants, aged around 72, driving weekly. Over 5.6 years, they underwent cognitive tests annually, with brain scans and cerebrospinal fluid samples every few years.

Results showed that 24 participants stopped driving, 15 died, and 46 developed cognitive impairments. Factors for stopping included neurological issues, vision changes, health problems, and moving to assisted living. Notably, women, those with cognitive impairments, and participants with lower cognitive test scores were more likely to stop driving. However, Alzheimer's biomarkers, such as amyloid plaques and tau tangles, did not predict driving cessation.

Women were four times more likely to stop driving than men, and those with cognitive impairment were 3.5 times more likely to stop. This study supports guidelines advising individuals with mild cognitive impairment to stop driving.

Tampa's Florida Aquarium Makes USA Today's Top 10 List!

The Florida Aquarium in Tampa has been voted one of the top 10 aquariums in the United States by USA Today, thanks to a public vote influenced by a panel of travel experts. This honor highlights the Aquarium's dedication to exceptional exhibits, visitor experiences, and vital conservation efforts, such as animal rescue and ocean health advocacy.

Mayor Jane Castor praised the Aquarium, calling it a "true Tampa gem" and a regional leader in culture and conservation. She emphasized that the Aquarium's commitment to excellence and innovation promises a bright future for both the institution and the city.

Renowned internationally, The Florida Aquarium entertains and educates visitors, conducts pioneering research, and significantly boosts the local economy. Last year, it welcomed over 1 million visitors, contributing an economic benefit of $275 million.

Roger Germann, President & CEO of The Florida Aquarium, expressed gratitude for the community's support, highlighting the Aquarium's mission to provide top-notch experiences, animal care, wildlife education, and community contributions.
