Record Heatwave Hits Tampa Bay: Essential Tips to Stay Cool

The Tampa Bay area is set to experience record-high temperatures, with inland cities facing "feels-like" temps in the 100s. Health officials recommend staying indoors, especially during peak heat hours between 2-3 p.m.
Here are five free ways to stay cool and avoid overheating:
Drink plenty of water: Aim for at least 64 ounces daily and hydrate before going outside.
Dress appropriately: Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothes to allow sweat to evaporate.
Use cool wash rags to lower your body temperature.
Head to water: Pools or beaches can provide relief.
Place ice buckets in front of a fan for a cooling breeze.
Stay hydrated and dress wisely to beat the heat.

Tampa Veterans Honor Fallen Heroes with Grueling Memorial Day Workout

In Tampa, over 100 veterans, active duty military personnel, and their families gathered at CrossFit Jaguar on Memorial Day to honor fallen soldiers.
The event featured The Murph workout, named after Lt. Michael Murphy, who died in Afghanistan in 2005. Participants completed a grueling routine of a one-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and another one-mile run.
David Huston from the Concerned Veterans for America Foundation emphasized the importance of honoring fallen heroes and fostering camaraderie.
Army veteran Suzanne Marshall and National Guard member Christian Nunez highlighted the emotional and physical challenges of the workout, which strengthens bonds and commemorates those who sacrificed their lives for the country.

Philips to Pay $1.1 Billion in CPAP Machine Injury Settlement

Philips has reached a $1.1 billion settlement to resolve personal injury claims related to its 2021 recall of CPAP and BiPAP machines. The recall was due to polyester-based polyurethane (PE-PUR) foam in these devices degrading and causing serious health issues.
This settlement, separate from a $445 million economic loss settlement earlier this year, covers personal injury and medical monitoring claims. Philips has been providing replacement devices to affected customers since the recall.
CPAP machines, used to treat sleep apnea, keep airways open during sleep. The settlement includes $1.075 billion for personal injury claims and $25 million for medical monitoring. Injuries covered include new or worsening asthma, COPD, chronic bronchitis, various cancers, and other respiratory conditions. The medical monitoring fund will support research and treatment development.
More information on filing claims will be available by June 10, 2024. The deadline for filing claims related to the economic loss settlement is August 9, 2024.

Historic Feat: 12 USF Athletes Qualify for NCAA Track and Field Championships

The University of South Florida's track and field team made history at the NCAA East First Round in Lexington, Kentucky. With a record-breaking performance, the Bulls secured nine spots in the NCAA Championships, sending eight men and four women to compete in seven events in Eugene, Oregon.
Standout athletes Shevioe Reid and Abdul-Rasheed Saminu each qualified for three events. Saminu will compete in the 100m dash, 200m dash, and 4x100m relay, while Reid will take part in the 200m dash, 4x100m relay, and 4x400m relay.
USF's men's relay teams made history by qualifying both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays for the first time. The women's 4x400m relay team set a program record to secure their spot.
Devontie Archer and Jaleel Croal each qualified for two events. Archer will compete in the 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay, while Croal will join Reid and Saminu in the 200m dash and the 4x100m relay.
