Sheriff Nocco Requests 9% Budget Increase to Combat Resource Strain

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco has requested a 9% budget increase to address the challenges posed by rapid local development. His 2024-25 budget request of $164.5 million is up from the current $150 million but still falls short of his department's needs. Nocco highlighted that recent approvals of 10,000 new residences necessitate 40 additional deputies, costing $8.3 million in the first year and $4.9 million annually thereafter. Despite receiving 40% of new property taxes from county growth, Nocco emphasized that current funding and the annual addition of 10 deputies are insufficient. He also outlined the need for $725,000 for armored vehicles, $300,000 for a protective pole barn, and more funds for vehicle replacements and the forensics unit.

Nocco stressed the importance of maintaining competitive salaries to attract and retain quality staff. He urged county commissioners to prioritize public safety funding, citing a citizen survey where over 90% deemed it a top priority.

Florida Homeowners Gain Relief from HOA Overreach with New Law

Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed HB 1203, a new law curbing the powers of homeowners’ associations (HOAs) in Florida, effective July 1. The law mandates HOAs with over 100 parcels to post all rules, budgets, and pertinent documents online by January 1 and provide meeting notices and agendas 14 days in advance.

Key provisions bar HOAs from:

  • Banning non-commercial, personal, or work vehicles on properties.

  • Regulating interiors of homes not visible from public areas.

  • Requiring approval for unseen HVAC systems.

  • Prohibiting vegetable gardens not visible from public areas.

  • Fining for garbage cans left out within 24 hours of trash collection.

  • Fining for holiday decorations without prior notice; residents have a week to comply.

HOA managers must complete 4-8 hours of annual education approved by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. The bill, passed unanimously in March and sponsored by Republican Representatives Tiffany Esposito, Adam Anderson, and Juan Porras, aims to address harassment and selective enforcement by HOAs.

Top Prospects to Compete in MLB's New Futures Skills Showcase

Major League Baseball has announced the inaugural Futures Skills Showcase, set to debut as part of All-Star Saturday on July 13 at Globe Life Field in Arlington. This new event will follow the All-Star Futures Game, featuring top prospects competing in a series of hitting challenges to showcase their skills.

The event consists of three rounds: "Hit It Here," where hitters target infield and outfield obstacles; "Call Your Shot," focusing on bat control with players aiming for specific fields; and "Swing for the Fences," highlighting power hitting with bonuses for opposite-field home runs.

Top prospects like Jackson Holliday, Junior Caminero, and Dylan Crews are expected to excel. The showcase aims to enhance fan engagement and provide a platform for young talents.
