Scorching Temps: Tampa Bay Braces for Record Heat and Triple-Digit Heat Index

The Tampa Bay area is expected to face record-breaking heat this weekend, with temperatures 5-10 degrees above average, reaching into the upper 90s. The heat index could push temperatures into triple digits from June 7-9, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Meteorologist Brandon Buckingham cites record warm water temperatures and a high-pressure dome preventing rainfall as the causes. Residents are urged to take precautions if outdoors for extended periods.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management forecasts triple-digit heat indexes, potentially triggering heat advisories in the Tampa Bay area. A heat advisory is issued when the heat index reaches 108-112 degrees.

Next week, tropical moisture may bring downpours to the Tampa Bay area, alleviating drought conditions and reducing temperatures. AccuWeather predicts several inches of rain, cooling the region.

Tampa Bay Celebrates Young Spelling Bee Star's Homecoming

Congrats USF!

Bruhat Soma, Tampa Bay's Spelling Bee star, returned home to a hero's welcome at Tampa International Airport on Wednesday night. The 12-year-old, a rising eighth-grader at Turner/Bartels K-8 School, triumphed in the 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee with a remarkable performance.

Soma clinched the title in a thrilling one-on-one spell-off, correctly spelling 29 words in 90 seconds on May 30. Since his victory, he has made notable appearances on The TODAY Show, Good Morning America, and LIVE with Kelly and Mark, and was honored with his own billboard in Tampa.

Despite the whirlwind of national attention, Soma was overjoyed to return home. Greeted by a cheering crowd at the airport, Soma shared his excitement: "I'm feeling really happy. I've been working for this since fourth grade, but last year I've been working really hard."

The community's support underscores Soma’s dedication and achievement, marking a proud moment for Tampa Bay.

This unexpected behavior allows them to access a variety of habitats and food sources, contributing to their resilience and ability to thrive in diverse environments. Their swimming prowess is not just a survival skill but also a remarkable testament to their versatility and resourcefulness.

Bears on the Move: How Tampa Bay Can Stay Safe This Season

Wildlife officials warn of increased black bear activity in Tampa Bay as juvenile bears seek new territories. Recently, a bear was seen in Hillsborough County, wandering neighborhoods before climbing a tree and leaving.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) advises giving bears space and never approaching or feeding them. To prevent bear encounters:

  • Secure garbage in sturdy sheds or bear-resistant containers.

  • Use bear-resistant dumpsters.

  • Protect gardens with electric fencing.

  • Pick ripe fruit and remove fallen fruit.

  • Secure bird and wildlife feeders.

  • Avoid leaving pet food outside.

  • Clean and store grills properly.

  • Alert neighbors about bear activity.

  • Keep dogs leashed and flip lights before letting them out at night.

  • Drive carefully to avoid hitting bears.

If threatened by a bear or to report a sighting, call the FWC hotline at 888-404-3922.

Major League Baseball (MLB) has integrated Negro League stats into its official record books, recognizing the significant contributions of Negro League players. This decision is especially meaningful for Tampa Bay, an area rich in Negro League history.

Augie Montejo, a docent at the Tampa Baseball Museum, highlighted the local impact: "Many talented players from Tampa, like Dwight Gooden and Gary Sheffield, came back to mentor the next generation."

Notable players such as Hall of Famer Buck O’Neil and Tampa native Dirk Gibbons, who played against Jackie Robinson, will have their stats honored alongside MLB greats.

Tampa Baseball Museum CEO Arminda Mata praised the move: "The integration of these stats ensures everyone is acknowledged for their accomplishments." This historic step enriches MLB history and cements the legacy of these athletes.
