Odessa Families Oppose Patel Charter School Amid Growing Concerns

Plans for a new Patel charter high school in Odessa, Pasco County, face opposition from local families expecting a larger district school. The proposed 1,000-student charter school by Dr. Kiran C. Patel High School, which operates in Temple Terrace, has sparked controversy among Starkey Ranch residents. They argue a public high school is needed to handle the area's rapid growth, as current schools are overcrowded. The district had planned a new high school on land bought in 2017 but recently sold part of it to the Patel Foundation for a charter school.
Erin Stroupe, leading the opposition, worries the charter school won’t guarantee seats for local children, worsening overcrowding. Vice chairperson Alison Crumbley criticized the decision, emphasizing the original intent for a traditional high school. District officials argue the 1,000-seat school will help manage growth and avoid construction expenses. The school board will review the charter application, with members seeking more information. Some parents fear the charter is a "done deal" but hope the board reconsiders.
Father's Day, celebrated on the third Sunday of June in many countries, has an intriguing origin story tied to the Great Depression and the rise of consumer culture.
While Mother's Day quickly gained popularity after its establishment in 1914, Father's Day struggled to gain the same recognition. It wasn't until the Great Depression and later World War II that the holiday found its footing. Retailers and advertisers pushed the celebration as a way to boost sales of traditionally masculine gifts like ties, hats, and tobacco.
This commercialization helped transform Father's Day into a widely accepted holiday. Thus, what began as a simple idea to honor fathers became a significant economic driver, revealing how consumerism shaped modern traditions.

Dr. Deep Sea Dives Into Veteran Brain Injury Research at USF

Dr. Joseph Dituri, affectionately known as "Dr. Deep Sea" at the University of South Florida (USF), is famed for spending 100 days 30 feet underwater in Key Largo's Jules’ Undersea Lodge. His record-breaking feat led to significant reductions in stress levels, inflammation, and a slight loss in height, all of which normalized after resurfacing.
Dituri, assistant vice president of veterans’ clinical research, is now using his underwater experience to aid veterans with traumatic brain injuries. He is leading a hyperbaric chamber study at USF, funded by $28 million in grants from the Florida legislature. The new facility, set to complete by August, will feature six hyperbaric chambers for a double-blind, randomized study involving 450 to 600 veterans.
Dituri aims to explore the benefits of pressurized breathing, similar to conditions he experienced underwater, to improve veterans' lives. This project represents the fusion of his diving expertise and medical research, highlighting the potential of hyperbaric medicine in treating brain injuries.

Tampa Spartans Triumph: Historic 9th National Championship Win

The University of Tampa baseball team has secured its place in history by winning its ninth National Championship on Saturday. The Spartans, ranked No. 2, overcame a 0-2 deficit against the Angelo State Rams, gaining momentum in the sixth inning to score six runs and ultimately claim victory.
This momentous win was highlighted by Tampa's E.J. Cumbo, who recorded his 400th career hit, becoming one of only three players in NCAA history to achieve this feat. Cumbo joins the ranks of Wichita State's Phil Stephenson and Clemson's Khalil Green.
The triumph in Cary, North Carolina, marks Tampa's sixth national title since 2000, a record for the NCAA Division II level. This win also ties the Spartans with Florida Southern for the most championships in this division, underscoring their dominance in college baseball.
Head coach Joe Urso celebrated with his team at the USA Baseball National Training Complex, reflecting on the hard-fought victory and the legacy of excellence that the University of Tampa baseball program continues to build.
