Discover Tampa's Best Southern Cuisine: Top 16 Restaurants Rated by Diners

When traveling through the Southern United States, you’ll encounter some of the most delightful and comforting cuisine in America: Southern food.

Southern cuisine, which includes dishes like hush puppies, ham hocks, beignets, and barbecue, is diverse and hearty. A typical Southern meal might start with pimento cheese dip, followed by fried chicken or Louisiana étouffée, and end with a sweet slice of chess pie paired with sweet tea.

Southern food is unique due to its rich blend of cultural influences. Spanish staples like potatoes and cocoa are common, while the Acadians brought seafood traditions that evolved into Creole cuisine. African ingredients such as okra, sorghum, and black-eyed peas became integral, and French cooking techniques are prevalent. Native American influences are evident in corn-based dishes like succotash and grits.

To help you find a taste of the South in Tampa, Stacker has compiled a list of the highest-rated Southern restaurants in the area using Yelp data. Visit the original story in the website below to explore Tampa’s top spots for Southern cuisine:

Wesley Chapel May Welcome Tesla's Hassle-Free Dealership Model

Wesley Chapel, known for its upscale car dealerships like Lexus, Audi, and BMW, may soon welcome Tesla. The proposed Tesla store, still under review, would be located in the Seven Oaks MPUD (formerly Saddlebrook Village) off Eagleston Boulevard, near I-75.

Plans submitted to the county indicate an 8-acre parcel is designated for a 50,353-square-foot dealership with sales, service, and delivery. Tesla’s unique model includes stores, galleries, and service centers, eliminating haggling and offering set prices for vehicles, often purchased online or via smartphones.

Tesla already operates 26 stores in Florida, including locations in Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Sarasota. Despite facing increased competition, Tesla remains a leading force in the electric vehicle market.

If approved, the new Tesla store in Wesley Chapel will enhance local access to Tesla vehicles and services, supplementing the limited charging options in the area, with only one Tesla Super Charger currently available at the Wawa on S.R. 54.

One particularly striking and little-known fact about Southern cooking is that it has been significantly influenced by Native American cuisine.

Many staple ingredients and techniques in Southern cooking, such as the use of corn (in dishes like cornbread and grits), beans, squash, and the practice of smoking meats, can be traced back to Native American culinary traditions.

This influence has shaped the flavors and dishes that are now considered quintessentially Southern.

Tempe Truck Accident Causes Utility Pole to Fall into Pool with Children

Over-imaginative view of Tempe situation

In Tempe, Arizona, a semi-truck hit a low-hanging communications cable, causing several utility poles to collapse, with one falling into a pool where five children, aged 8 to 16, were swimming. Thankfully, no one was injured.

The crash, described as sounding like a car crashing through a wall, has raised concerns about low-hanging cables and aging utility poles in the area.

Although new poles have been installed by Salt River Project (SRP), old ones remain, creating confusion about maintenance responsibilities. The City of Tempe stated that utility companies are responsible for upkeep, but residents are seeking clearer answers.

Wesley Chapel's Biggest Gas Station Coming Soon to Wiregrass

Daybreak Market at Wiregrass, located at the southeast corner of S.R. 56 and Heuland Pond Blvd., is set to become the largest gas station in Wesley Chapel.

This new convenience store will feature "76®" branded gasoline, a $0.99 coffee and fountain drink offer, a beer cave named “The Ice Box,” and both indoor and outdoor seating.

With up to 24 fueling positions, it will surpass the fueling capacity of nearby stations like RaceTrac and Costco. The construction is nearing completion, with the major structures in place. This will be the second gas station in the Wiregrass Ranch development, following the 7-Eleven at Mansfield Blvd. and Wiregrass School Rd.

Deliah Autry: Tampa's Flag Football Star Secures Spot on U.S. National Team

Deliah Autry, a prominent figure in women's flag football, has been selected for the U.S. Women's Flag Football National Team for the fourth time. Autry's impressive career includes two gold medals and one silver, marking her as one of the sport's most accomplished international athletes.

Autry's passion for flag football began over a decade ago at Robinson High School. Her journey continued through college at the University of South Florida and Florida A&M, where she earned her doctorate. She experienced the intensity of international play, which differs significantly from the 7-on-7 format used in high school and college to the faster-paced 5-on-5 format used internationally.

This year, Autry was one of 12 women selected from 60 contenders to represent the U.S. in the upcoming world championships in Finland. The sport will debut at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, highlighting its growth and the opportunities it offers young girls globally.
