Hillsborough County Confirms Dengue Fever Case, Urges Mosquito Precautions

The Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County has confirmed a locally-acquired case of dengue fever. In response, the department and Hillsborough County Mosquito Control are implementing aerial spraying to enhance surveillance and prevention efforts.

Residents are urged to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites, such as draining standing water to reduce breeding sites, maintaining and chlorinating swimming pools, and covering plastic pools when not in use.

Additional recommendations include wearing protective clothing, keeping doors and windows closed, treating gear with permethrin, repairing screens, and using insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, 2-undecanone, or IR3535 to prevent mosquito bites.

Pasco Introduces New Road Tax, Ends Costly Neighborhood Repaving

Pasco County is transitioning to a new road maintenance system funded by an annual tax on all property owners. This replaces the previous system where neighborhoods had to petition and share the cost of repaving. The new tax plan, pending formal approval next month, will relieve property owners of $13 million in old assessments. This change aims to distribute costs across all property owners in unincorporated areas, allowing for more consistent road maintenance.

Commissioner Kathryn Starkey stated that this approach aligns with practices in other communities and prevents neighbor conflicts over paving projects. The county will now assess all roads, including major ones, using detailed surveys to plan maintenance and repaving. The new system extends to roads outside city limits and allows negotiations with community development districts. Additionally, Pasco commissioners approved a park maintenance tax to address a backlog of work. Final tax rates will be set after public hearings in September.

Florida Rapper Julio Foolio Killed in Tampa, Investigation Underway

Florida rapper Julio Foolio is believed to have been killed in a shooting at a Tampa Holiday Inn early Sunday morning. The incident occurred around 4:40 a.m. in the hotel parking lot at Fowler Avenue and McKinley Drive.

Tampa police reported that two cars were targeted, resulting in one fatality and three injuries. The deceased, tentatively identified as 26-year-old Charles Jones (Julio Foolio), has not been confirmed by the medical examiner. The victims were attempting to secure a room when the shooting happened. The injured are expected to survive.

Police are reviewing surveillance footage and assisting hotel guests. No arrests have been made. Confirmation of Julio Foolio's death came from his girlfriend's Instagram post and his attorney. The rapper had survived previous shootings in 2020 and 2023. The Tampa police urge anyone with information to come forward

One particularly striking and little-known fact about dengue fever is that the virus can cause a severe and potentially fatal condition known as "dengue hemorrhagic fever" (DHF).

DHF is characterized by high fever, bleeding, liver enlargement, and circulatory failure, which can lead to a dangerous drop in blood pressure and shock. Despite its severity, dengue hemorrhagic fever can often go unrecognized in its early stages because its initial symptoms can be similar to those of a typical dengue fever infection. This makes early detection and treatment crucial to prevent severe outcomes.

Wesley Chapel's KRATE to Charge for Monthly R&B Events

KRATE at the Grove in Wesley Chapel will start charging a cover fee for its popular R&B nights, beginning in June. Previously free, these events will now cost $5 in advance online (plus a $0.49 service fee) or $10 at the door. Children aged 12 and under can still attend for free.

Held from 7-11 p.m. on the last Friday of each month, R&B nights feature DJs, dining, and shopping. KRATE explained that the fee will help maintain the event's quality and safety, with new measures for traffic control and crowd management.

The venue also promises additional activities for kids and extra R&B entertainment. Other events, such as monthly country nights, remain free. The decision has sparked some frustration among regular attendees.
