Second Town Hall Announced After Recent New Tampa Shootings

Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw and City Councilman Luis Viera co-hosted a Town Hall meeting on June 24 at the New Tampa Recreation Center to discuss two recent shootings in the area.

Although no suspects have been arrested, authorities assured the public that both incidents were targeted and not related, posing no ongoing threat to the community. The Tampa Police Department is working with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office to identify the shooters.

Residents are encouraged to provide information or anonymous tips. A second Public Safety Town Hall is scheduled for July 30 at the Compton Park clubhouse to offer further updates. More details will be available in the upcoming issues of Neighborhood News.

Miss Tampa Triumphs: Casana Fink Wins Miss Florida 2024

Casana Fink, the reigning Miss Tampa, was crowned Miss Florida 2024 at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland after a competitive three-night event. She impressed judges with a lyrical dance to Lauren Daigle’s "Rescue" and won the evening gown competition. Fink received a $20,000 scholarship and was awarded additional scholarships for practical leadership and community service.

As Miss Florida, Fink will represent the state in the Miss America competition and plans to advocate for organ and tissue donation through her foundation, Give to Live.

The event concluded with talent and evening gown showcases, plus an interview with former Miss America Ericka Dunlop. Additionally, Ireland Harkins, Miss St. Augustine’s Teen, was named Miss Florida’s Teen 2024 and will compete in Miss America’s Teen Competition

One unexpected fact about the Miss Florida Pageant is that it began in 1935, but it was interrupted during World War II. The pageant was then revived in 1947, and it has been held annually since, making it a long-standing tradition in Florida.

One unexpected fact about the Miss America Pageant is that it originally began in 1921 as a marketing gimmick to extend the tourist season in Atlantic City, New Jersey. It was initially a "bathing beauty revue" aimed at boosting tourism and attracting visitors to the boardwalk.

Study Reveals Olive-Based Compound Lowers Blood Sugar and Reduces Obesity

A recent study by researchers at Virginia Tech has found that elenolic acid, a compound in olives, can significantly lower blood sugar levels and promote weight loss in obese diabetic mice. After one week, the mice treated with elenolic acid showed improved blood sugar regulation and weight reduction compared to untreated controls.

The effects were comparable to the diabetes medication liraglutide and superior to metformin. The compound works by promoting the secretion of gut hormones that regulate metabolism and reduce food intake.

Although promising, the concentration of elenolic acid in olives needs to be higher to replicate these benefits from diet alone. Further research is underway to explore its safety and effectiveness for potential human trials.

University of South Florida's Melanie Green Captures Prestigious R&A Women's Amateur

Melanie Green, an alumna of the University of South Florida and AAC Women's Golf Player of the Year, made history by winning the R&A Women’s Amateur Championship. She is the first American to achieve this since Kelli Kuehne in 1996. The championship, founded in 1893, is a prestigious event in women’s amateur golf.

In her debut appearance, Green faced a strong international field and defeated Scotland's Lorna McClymont 2up in a thrilling 36-hole final. Despite an early deficit, Green staged a remarkable comeback, clinching the victory with two birdies on the last holes.

Her win grants her entry into major championships, including the AIG Women’s Open and the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. Throughout the tournament, Green showcased her skill by defeating top-ranked players, marking a significant milestone in her career.
