GOOD MORNING

In “Of Interest” is an article about Veterans Florida.. I can attest to how well they assist veterans in their transition from the military world to that of the civilian. The assistance they bring to making this a successful transition is both well thought out and effective.

Hillsborough and Pasco Schools Welcome Teach for America Teachers

Teach for America is bringing 35 newly trained educators to Tampa Bay to help address the teacher shortage in Hillsborough and Pasco schools. The initiative aims to support struggling schools like Sheehy Elementary but faces criticism for potentially high turnover rates and ties to the charter school movement.

The program recruits college graduates, providing training and financial support for a two-year teaching commitment. While recent studies show positive impacts on student performance, critics question the long-term stability and professionalization of teaching. Despite these concerns, local educators hope the new teachers will bring a fresh perspective and renewed hope to the region’s schools.

Steak 'n Shake Set to Sizzle in

Wesley Chapel

This is a really good idea!

A new Steak 'n Shake will open at Wesley Chapel Boulevard and Old Pasco Road, near Palms Car Wash. Known for steakburgers and hand-dipped milkshakes, Steak 'n Shake has been a favorite since 1934. Local resident Sarah Thompson is excited about the convenience but hopes for more unique, locally-owned restaurants.

The prime location near major roads is expected to attract residents and visitors, making it a popular dining spot. As Wesley Chapel expands, the community seeks a mix of familiar chains and distinctive local eateries to enhance culinary diversity.

One unexpected and striking fact about Steak 'n Shake is that it was one of the first fast-food chains to offer drive-thru service, starting in the 1940s. This innovation set a precedent for the entire fast-food industry, making quick, convenient dining an integral part of American culture.

Steak 'n Shake originated in Normal, Illinois. The first restaurant was opened in 1934 by Gus Belt, who introduced the concept of "in sight, it must be right" by grinding steak into burgers in front of customers to assure them of the quality. This transparent approach to food preparation helped establish the brand's reputation for quality and freshness.

Veterans Florida Named Key Resource in Military Transition Assistance

A newly enacted Florida law strengthens the statewide Veterans Florida network to assist service members transitioning to civilian careers.

House Bill 1329 designates Veterans Florida as the primary resource for military transition assistance, offering job and entrepreneurship training for veterans and their families. The non-profit works with organizations like the Florida Department of Veteran Affairs to streamline employment services.

Troy Underwood, owner of Tampa Steel and Supply and a former Army Reserve member, emphasizes the importance of such resources. He and his wife benefited from an entrepreneurship course through Veterans Florida, aiding their business success. The law aims to provide seamless access to employment resources, supporting fields like aerospace, manufacturing, and agriculture.

Veterans Florida ensures veterans and their families in Florida, or those planning to move, can access various training programs and job resources, facilitating a smoother transition to civilian life.

Jon Cooper Gets Second Chance to Lead Team Canada in 2026 Olympics

Jon Cooper, head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning, will lead Team Canada in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. Initially slated to coach in the 2022 Olympics, Cooper’s opportunity was lost when the NHL withdrew due to COVID-19 concerns. Growing up in Prince George, British Columbia, Cooper always dreamed of representing his country, making this second chance particularly meaningful alongside his two Stanley Cup victories with the Lightning.

This role adds to his existing responsibilities, as he will also participate in selecting the roster for the 4 Nations Faceoff, an international tournament in February featuring teams from Canada, the United States, Sweden, and Finland. Cooper has prior experience coaching Team Canada to a silver medal in the 2017 World Championships and assisting in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. His strong connections with Hockey Canada will aid him as he embraces this renewed opportunity on the international stage.
