HCPS to Open State-of-the-Art Vocational School in Plant City by 2025

Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) is set to build a new vocational school in Plant City. Located on a 16-acre site near Plant City Stadium, construction will begin this year with a groundbreaking ceremony in September 2024, and classes starting in August 2025.

The 52,000-square-foot facility will feature shops for Industrial Electricity, Welding Technology, Building Construction Technology, and HVAC. It will also offer a short-term forklift certification program. Each vocation provides year-long career certificate programs, using industry-standard equipment to prepare students for the workforce.

The school will accommodate up to 900 students, initially employing five teachers along with clerical and custodial staff, with plans to expand to 48 employees. High school students in Hillsborough County can dual-enroll, attending part-time while continuing their regular education, and adults from any location can enroll full-time.

Currently referred to as Plant City Career Center (PCCC), the school aims to address the growing demand for skilled workers in high-demand fields.

AdventHealth Residency Program Tackles Doctor Shortage in Pasco County

Wesley Chapel, Fla.Florida faces a critical doctor shortage as its population grows and many physicians retire. The state, ranked 41st in healthcare access by Florida TaxWatch, could see a shortfall of 18,000 doctors by 2035. In response, new legislation and local hospital initiatives are underway.

AdventHealth's Family Medicine Residency program in Wesley Chapel aims to retain doctors in Pasco County, one of the state's fastest-growing areas. Dr. Arielle Ashkenazi and other residents chose the program due to the high demand.

AdventHealth leaders emphasize that doctors often stay where they train. The "Live Healthy Act" also helps by offsetting medical school costs. Dr. Omari Hodge believes that integrating residents into the community will encourage them to stay. The program is accredited for 24 residents, with eight new participants each year.

St. Petersburg Greenlights $6.5 Billion Redevelopment with New Rays Stadium

The St. Petersburg City Council has approved a $6.5 billion redevelopment project, which includes a new stadium for the Tampa Bay Rays, ensuring the team's presence in the city for 30 more years. The 5-3 vote concludes months of debate.

The project aims to revitalize the Historic Gas Plant District, featuring infrastructure upgrades, parking garages, hotels, business spaces, an African American museum, affordable housing units, and a state-of-the-art stadium. The initiative requires nearly $743 million in public funding from the city and Pinellas County.

Mayor Ken Welch supports the project, emphasizing its potential community benefits. The Pinellas County Commission will vote later this month on allocating additional funds. While some council members criticized the public expense, proponents argue the redevelopment will significantly boost the local economy, creating tens of thousands of jobs.
