TPD Boosts Patrols in New Tampa

Amid Safety Concerns

Following a spate of violent incidents, Tampa Police Department (TPD) has significantly increased its presence in New Tampa. This follows a tense community meeting addressing residents' safety concerns.

TPD Deputy Chief Brett Owen reported progress on several violent cases from June. The murder of Kyle Prisco on June 17 remains unsolved. TPD has increased patrols, leading to recent arrests, including car break-in suspects and members of a motorcycle theft ring. Owen emphasized the importance of community cooperation and noted a 66% rise in self-initiated police activity in the past month.

MOSI Ignites Summer Fun with Over 100 Science Camps for Kids

The Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) is offering over 100 summer camps, including the exciting "How to be a Mad Scientist" camp. Recently, 20 kids delved into science under the guidance of instructor Josephine Hackett.

"Mad science gives us a huge scope of what we can learn about," Hackett said. The camp features themed days like "space day" and "explosion day." Kids create their own volcanoes using flour, salt, oil, baking soda, and vinegar, resulting in thrilling eruptions.

"…this is one of the few times that I get with kids where it is just making the mess, (is the) fun," Hackett shared. These hands-on activities leave children jumping and screaming in excitement.

Hackett hopes these camps inspire a lasting interest in science. "I hope that the kids that attend this camp get the feeling that the world really is their oyster, that there is so much for them to experience and learn with science," she said.

One particularly striking and little-known fact about crocodile attacks is that the majority occur in freshwater settings, not saltwater.

While saltwater crocodiles (often referred to as "salties") are more notorious due to their size and aggressive nature, it is actually the freshwater habitats such as rivers, lakes, and swamps where most attacks happen. This is because these environments are where people are more likely to encounter crocodiles while fishing, swimming, or washing, leading to a higher incidence of attacks.

Additionally, freshwater crocodiles, while generally less aggressive, can still pose a significant threat, especially during nesting season when they are highly protective of their young.

Queensland River Tragedy: Crocodile Kills Tourist, Heroic Act Saves Wife

Human remains believed to be 40-year-old Dr. Dave Hogbin were found inside a large crocodile in Queensland, Australia. Dr. Hogbin, from Newcastle, New South Wales, was on a camping trip with his family when he fell into the Annan River near Cooktown.

The incident occurred when part of a riverbank gave way, causing Dr. Hogbin to fall. Despite his wife Jane's attempts to save him, the conditions made it impossible for him to escape. In a heroic act, he let go of Jane's arm to prevent her from falling in.

Wildlife rangers euthanized a 4.9-meter crocodile found near the site. Human remains inside the crocodile are believed to be Dr. Hogbin's, pending further testing.
