Tampa Bay Veterans Benefit from PACT Act's Lifesaving Health Screenings

U.S. Army Sgt. Nicole Leger, who served in Afghanistan 15 years ago, now receives benefits under the PACT Act after suffering from health issues linked to toxic exposure.
During her deployment, she manned burn pits, unaware of the risks. After years of struggling with migraines, joint pain, and other symptoms, Leger sought help from the VA.
The PACT Act, named after Sgt. First Class Heath Robinson, provides crucial support to veterans like Leger affected by toxic exposures. Since its enactment, nearly 5.7 million veterans have been screened, with over 1 million receiving disability benefits.
Tampa Welcomes 311 with Special Concert and Fresh Music Release

This weekend, Tampa will host an intimate concert by the popular rock band 311 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. The band is scheduled to perform on Sunday, August 18, 2024, and fans can expect to hear their latest single, “You’re Gonna Get It.” This new track marks 311's first release since their 2019 album, Voyager. Unlike its name might suggest, the song is not a cover of the Tom Petty hit but is an original piece that captures the high-stakes thrill of youthful decisions—whether they lead to smooth escapes or unavoidable consequences. The music video for the song, with its nod to the movie Fight Club, underscores this theme.
Opening acts for the evening include the Los Angeles-based rock group Awolnation and Neon Trees, who made a strong impression on Tampa earlier this year at the inaugural Innings Festival. Both bands will set the stage for what promises to be an electrifying performance by 311.

Arrests Made After Riverview Couple Followed, Shot Over Casino Winnings

A Riverview couple was shot and robbed after winning $3,300 at the Hard Rock Casino in Tampa. The incident occurred around 5:00 a.m. on August 2, 2024, as the couple arrived home.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, doorbell camera footage captured part of the attack.
Court records show two suspects followed the couple from the casino to their home, where one held them at gunpoint, demanding money before shooting them.
Marcus Jenkins, 34, and Tristin Wright, 36, have been arrested and face multiple charges. Authorities are still searching for a third suspect.

USF's Record-Breaking QB Byrum Brown Named to Fourth National Watch List

USF quarterback Byrum Brown has been named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List, marking his fourth national award recognition this season.
Brown, who set multiple USF records in 2023, including passing yards (3,292) and touchdowns (26), is now among the most closely watched players in college football. His stellar 2023 season also saw him lead the Bulls in rushing yards (809) and touchdowns (11), making him one of only two FBS players to surpass both 3,000 passing yards and 800 rushing yards.
Brown will face tough competition in the 2024 season, with key matchups against Alabama’s Jalen Milroe and Miami’s Cam Ward. USF returns 19 starters from their record-setting 2023 team, which finished 7-6 and claimed a 45-0 Boca Raton Bowl victory over Syracuse. The Bulls open their season on August 31 against Bethune-Cookman.
