Healthcare Future Bright in Pasco: New Facilities and Training Institutes

Central and East Pasco are undergoing a major healthcare expansion. The $2.6 billion Speros FL Moffitt Cancer Center in Angeline, a 775-acre medical campus, is set to open in 2026, featuring advanced proton therapy and research facilities. This project will generate around 14,000 jobs.
AdventHealth is also expanding with a new $26 million emergency room in Wesley Chapel, expected to open by 2025.
Florida Medical Clinic has partnered with Orlando Health, which is building a 300-bed hospital in Wesley Chapel, slated for completion in 2026.
Additionally, Pasco-Hernando State College received $1.5 million to establish a Nursing and Allied Health Advancement Institute, addressing the state's healthcare workforce shortage.
South Florida Estuaries Record Hottest Sea Temps on Earth, Endangering
Marine Life

Scientists from the University of South Florida have discovered that sea surface temperatures in South Florida’s estuaries have become hotter than any ocean worldwide, posing a serious threat to marine ecosystems. Florida Bay recently recorded water temperatures reaching 38°C (100.4°F), exceeding human body temperature. Over the last 20 years, these coastal waters have warmed by two degrees Celsius, driven by rising air temperatures.
These extreme conditions are stressing critical habitats like coral reefs, leading to devastating bleaching events. The warmer waters also jeopardize seagrass beds, essential for manatees, and could spur harmful algal blooms.

Universal Eyes Remake of Florida-Filmed 'Creature from the Black Lagoon

The horror classic "Creature from the Black Lagoon" is set for a possible revival, with filmmaker James Wan, known for "Saw" and "The Conjuring," in talks to helm the project. The original 1954 film, famous for its terrifying "Gill-man," has deep ties to Florida, where much of its iconic underwater scenes were filmed.
Wakulla Springs near Tallahassee served as the eerie setting for the creature’s lair, while Silver Springs near Ocala was featured in the sequel.
Ricou Browning, a Florida State University student and lifeguard, portrayed the creature underwater, introduced to Universal by Newt Perry, the manager of Wakulla Springs and creator of the Weeki Wachee mermaid shows. Browning's challenging underwater scenes, filmed without goggles, contributed to the film's lasting legacy.

One particularly striking and little-known fact about filmmaking in Florida is that the state was once home to the "Winter Film Capital of the World." In the early 1900s, Jacksonville, Florida, was a bustling center for the motion picture industry, rivaling Hollywood before Hollywood became synonymous with filmmaking.
Between 1908 and 1920, over 30 silent film studios were established in Jacksonville, producing hundreds of films. The city's sunny weather, diverse scenery, and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean made it an ideal location for year-round filming.
The industry eventually moved west to Hollywood due to a combination of labor disputes, political pressures, and better financial incentives, leading to Jacksonville's decline as a film hub.

Field Trip Takes a Turn: Teen Handcuffed for Falling Asleep in Court

A 16-year-old girl visiting a Detroit courtroom on a field trip ended up in handcuffs and jail clothes after Judge Kenneth King disapproved of her behavior. The teen was part of a group organized by The Greening of Detroit, a nonprofit group, to observe court proceedings at the 36th District Court. During the session, the girl was caught nodding off, prompting King to issue a stern warning. When she didn’t adjust her behavior, King ordered her to change into jail attire and wear handcuffs, calling it his "own version of 'Scared Straight.'"
The judge’s actions have sparked significant backlash. The nonprofit stated the girl was traumatized, and Judge Aliyah Sabree, a leader at the court, criticized King’s conduct, vowing to address the situation. King later contacted the girl's parents, offering to mentor her, but the incident has raised questions about the appropriateness of his methods.
